Yes, you have to pay real money to get real food and real shelter, but doesn't one also have to do REAL work to get that REAL money? I see little difference between psychic test and common thieves. In fact, I much rather be a common thief, that way there isn't any deception to it. When someone's been robbed by a thief, there aren't any dilusions that go with it. "I've been robbed", or "my purse has been stolen", or "my wallet's been lifted", and that's it. The psychic goes through a lot of crap to tell people things they, most commonly, already know, to take their money just the same way a theif did. Neither worked for the money! And a sap who walks out of a psychic's booth (or whatever) doesn't say "I've been robbed", they honestly think they've spent their money on something worth while (even if their subconscious has to go to great lengths to be sure the psychic's predictions come true).
Now, my "flashes" don't quite fit the mold of "psychic" who might charge, but if I ever got a handle on them, and could produce them as neccesary, I doubt I'd ever charge for them. The time my little sparkle works the least is always the same time I'm trying to make it happen. I can't imagine the pressure to produce on payment helping matters much. I believe the chief arrogance of scientists is to insist that the un-known may only be measured by way of the known, i.e. scientific method. It is what I would compare to an insistent assertion that if a magnetic tape can not be played on a Tuba then it does not contain music. Scientific method is specifically designed to remove subjective elements, so what of elements which may only be experienced subjectively an a psychic test?
During a time of serious illness years ago I noticed what appeared to be small circles of color which I sensed with inner vision arising on my body. These seemed to be polarized, only appearing in pairs, and with opposite polarity. I found that by touching the two poles with my two hands, I sensed a circuit of energy flowing through my hands from the circles. It seemed that this flow neutralized the imbalance which existed between the circles. My very severe pain was very noticeably reduced by my laying on of hands to my own body.
Years later during a period when I worked as a nurses aid, I noticed that a few patients on whom I had surreptitiously performed this operation while pretending to adjust sheets, or while performing everyday body care, commented on feeling much better afterwards . I made the serious mistake one day of admitting what I had been doing to one patient who had exclaimed that my hands felt extremely hot, but noticed that her severe pain had all but disappeared. She insisted on knowing what I was doing. Within one day, the predominately Philippine (therefor more inclined toward superstition I thought) staff made it known to me that many of them believed I was a witch! and she wanted me to even take a psychic test ! I never again had the easy trust of the other staff members and in fact was subjected to quite uncomfortable scrutiny. The woman patient who had extracted my secret was so excited about my ability that she radiated an energy which made it impossible for me to give her the same relief from pain again, it was as though her attention to my actions made them impossible. This was not self-consciousness on my part but a physical or energy interference.
As far as scientific research regarding this energy goes, it is often said that the hands of people channeling this energy feel hot to the subject, and so I would say there is clearly a transference of energy. My opinion is that whenever there is an expression of the Divine through the medium of physical matter there is bound to be a corresponding physical mechanism in operation which may possibly be measured. However I wonder at the use of seeking the 'source' of the effect in the physical medium. Perhaps this is like seeking the source of a musical phrase by picking up a trumpet and physically looking into it after the player has gone.

The fascinating thing is that human traits, such as intuition, will power and charisma, are also psychic powers combined from the basic psychic gifts! People with strong will power or large charisma do not tend to see themselves as psychic, but in terms of brain waves they are easily placed: Charisma is a combination of the 'recieve present' gift, in the form of reading the minds of those around him, and a strong 'transmit past' power that actually allows him to subtly alter his own personality by changing his past, in such a way that the personality is more agreeable to the person he has just met (and mind-red)! This incredible discovery has been verified through brain wave readings many times in the laboratory. Similarly, 'will power' and 'being visionary' is nothing but a 'recieve future' and a 'transmit future'-psychic power combined.

As we can see, there have been experimental observations of brain waves for all nine positions on this grid - except one. The 'recieve future'+'transmit past' brain wave has not been observed in the laboratory yet, but the GUPT predicts that a psychic power of such a type MUST exist! It turns out (Fig. 7) that if you add *all* brain wave patterns in this grid together (including the theoretical RF+TP power) you get a flat line -- which is exactly what is demanded in standard neurology for a consistent brain function. Does this sound complicated? Don't worry, it isn't. Let us take an example to truly underline how incredible this result is: Let us take the case of a healer. A healer, while healing, has some interesting brain waves, that don't fit into the basic grid of psychic powers. But, if you add the brain wave patterns of 'recieve present' and 'transmit future', we get an almost perfect match! (Fig 5). How is this to be interpreted? Simple. A healer does nothing more than combine two psychic abilities, each of which on its own is relatively useful. She has a 'recieve present' power, which allows her to psychically recieve the problems of her client. She then uses a 'transmit future' power to alter the client's future in a way so that the problems will not bother her later. This is the way healing works. Simple, yet incredible! I'm not saying healers know that this is the way they are working. Many healers admit blankly that they do not know how their powers work. The GUPT explains it, and also lends strong scientific backing to the exploration and research into making healing more effective. Interestingly, the similar group of 'aura healers' have completely different brain waves. it turns out (Fig. 6) that they use a combination of 'recieve past' and 'transmit past'! This is clear enough, based on the knowledge of auras we have today. It is known (4) that many problems in our auras today stem from a trauma in the past, which left a 'dent' in the aura. To heal this dent, the aura healer uses his 'recieve past' gift to psychically 'read' the trauma in his client's aura. He then uses a 'transmit past' ability, not unlike retrokinesis, to alter the aura's damage in the past. The result is an instant healing in the present!

Our research has shown a strong correlation between the brain waves of the psychic and the type of psychic phenomena taking place. It has been well known for some time that the brain in its different states produces different types of waves, referred to as the 'alpha', 'beta', 'theta' and 'delta' waves. These waves can be measured using an EEG (electro-emcephalograph) (3). There is a measurable similarity between the conjuction of different types of brain waves in a telepathist and a remote seer, or a psychic photographer and a spoon bender. On figure 1, we see the high theta spike from all the 'recieve present'-type psychics, a spike which is completely absent from any of the 'transmit present' types. Similarly, the peaks on the alpha and beta on the 'transmit past' are almost the mirror image of the 'recieve future'. (Fig. 2).

As before mentioned, these six types of psychic powers are all different ways for the psychic to manipulate time. This is the essence of a psychic power. Now, the three powers in the 'recieve' row are all powers that in some way 'funnel' time into the psychic, while in the 'transmit/alter' row the psychic can 'spew' time. This is clearly refected in the brain waves of the two different rows, where they are practically inverse of eachother (fig. 3).
Now, the fascinating thing about this -- and, we dare say, the foundation upon which the GUPT is built -- is nature's capacity to *combine* two psychic powers, as long as one of them is a 'recieve' power, and one is a 'transmit' power. By simply adding the two brain wave functions of two compatible psychic powers, we get a new brainwave (Fig. 4). This resultant brain wave corresponds almost exactly to the brain waves of psychics which other powers! This has been experimentally verified, and has yielded some fascinating new insights into the nature of the human mind and paranormal abilities.

Well, the first observation to make is this:
TIME IS NOT STATIC.
It has been well known in paranormal circles for decades that some humans indeed do have an ability to recieve information from the past (as in Past Life Regression) and from the future (such as clairvoyance). It is also possible to alter the future and past, although this is less common. Altering the past is called Retrokinesis (1), and altering the future is a process referred to as Fate Bending, used almost exclusively by Voodoo Priests in certain african tribes (2).
For the sake of the GUPT, I will now write up some fundamental psychic powers in a grid, positioning them according to time and action:

This grid should be read as follows: For instance, 'Telepathy' is in the 'recieve' row and the 'present' column. This indicates that telepathy is a paranormal ability that allows the 'seer' to receive from the present. In the same way, 'telekinesis' is a process to transmit or alter the present through psychic means.
All basic psychic abilities can be placed somewhere in this grid. For instance, something like psychic photography is also in the 'telekinesis' box, since it alters the present. Therefore, it is prudent to view psychic abilities not as isolated abilities, but as 'representatives' of one of the six greater categories of psychic powers.

(what else you going to do?:) The next day you are moody and have a headache maybe. The subconscious can be overloaded. The party can cause a psychic upheaval. In attempting to make sense of the actually bizarre conversations you had the night before, the subconscious has a very difficult time doing this because the fact of the matter is a lot of what you and the people you talked to didn't actually make all that much sense even though at the time it appeared to. Excessive talk overloads the subconscious. It dissipates energy and monks take vows of silence (mouna in yoga) to accomplish the reverse. Silence allows a collectedness. A walk through the forest allows you to unwind some of the endless jabber that constantly plagues your mind.
The inner voice rattles on and on and on in all our waking hours. Like a radio that has been on so long you have forgotten there IS an off-switch. Yogic concentration is about mind control. Deliberately willing thoughts to cease. This does not mean a blank, dull, lethargic staring into space. It means an intense awareness of being in the Eternal Now. In samadhi you are so alive that you can not move. The mechanical thinking mind is like a butterfly trying to swim underwater. Painful for awareness/consciousness to get back into because it is so clunky. And then, to move the physical body - well - that is like the man in the moon. Sure as hell ain't me. Thats the sort of thing you go through coming out of samadhi. You clearly see how distinct you are from both the mind and the body - and a great big smile comes to your face knowing this.
By controlling the inner, the outer automatically comes under control. You are the creator of all you attract. Everything that happens is the result of everything that has happened. Every single electron - even in distant galaxys is doing exactly as it 'should' be.
Theres lots more to this sort of stuff. There is also the sub of the subconscious mind. The sub-superconscious mind. The instinctive mind/instinctive reactions/the aura. There are mystical games like thought watching.

Once understood, they evaporate. If you do not put the wrong thoughts in your mind to start with, they will not crop up in the first place in the future to begin with.

There is no limit to how much you can learn by understanding that you are 2 people. To be successful in meditation both the conscious mind and subconscious mind must work together. Seen in these terms, the 2 holes i n the sheet of paper must line up for you to 'see'. The goal then becomes lining up the 2 holes and this takes steadying the mind/not moving around/jumping from thought to thought. In sleep the subconscious makes sense out of the events of the day for the soul. This is like a good meal for the soul to evolve with.

I've been back to the 2nd psychic a few times since my initial visit. She always knows what's on my mind. I mean, she takes the words right out of my mouth. It's astounding. She's literally reading my mind. She knows what I'm concerned about at the moment. She knows what I like and what I don't like. Spooky, but true. She knew my thoughts while I was sitting there looking at her.

I never was a believer in psyhics myself. I thought they were a joke. In fact, I really didn't think much of them at all. I thought it was just 1-900 nonsense like the Psychic Friends Network.
But, I went to see a psychic last year and I was very impressed. The woman did a tarot card reading for me. She didn't know me from a doorknob, yet somehow described my life very accurately, even down to personal concerns between me and my fiance'. Things that you couldn't guess about acurately. Like specific things we had discussed. The woman did not perform a cold reading, she did not ask me probing questions of any kind.
So, I was intrigued and I went to see another psychic. I just called her out of the blue and requested a reading. 15 minutes later I was sitting in front of her. She knew nothing at all about me. I didn't give her my name or anything. She proceeded to describe the events of my life very accurately. I went through a major depression as a teenager and she described it to a tee. She also describe my family members very accurately and my concerns about the future. Again, she did not perform a cold reading, she did not ask probing questions.
I had a recent encounter with a psychic medium at a psychic fair. Again, this person had never met me and knew nothing about me and again did not ask a lot of questions (a cold reading). He picked up on the fact that my father had passed away recently and proceeded to pass along information about my father and messages from him. The information about my father was very accurate. My father was not an easy person to guess about, because he didn't have a lot of hobbies or personality traits. But, this medium described my father perfectly, the fact that he loved to read and always sat in his favorite chair. The messages he passed on from my father sounded very much like what my dad would say. My father described heaven as a place where you are reunited with deceased family members and friends and your knowledge and resources are limitless.
Try pyschics out before passing judgement based upon some closed-minded skeptic or some HBO show. I've read skeptics accounts of John Edward's show and they aren't an accurate portrayal of how he conducts his show. Be skeptical of skeptics.

She nurses the larvae, makes wax and comb, keeps the hive clean and guards against intruders, then spends the last days of her brief life . . . foraging in the fields for pollen and nectar. The worker bee performs all those chores necessary for the welfare of the colony, with one exception, that of egg-laying. But give the same worker larva a little more `Lebensraum', keep it on a strict diet of `royal jelly' and it becomes an equally complex organism - that of the queen bee - following an entirely different route of development and accomplishment. One notable change is the queen's life span, which may extend from six to eight years in comparison to the worker's short six weeks.
A queen bee does not gain her high office by descending from a royal line or by divine right. She and several other worker eggs are nominated candidates by groups of their peers throughout the hive. Those selected are given special attention and fed royal jelly, which actually transforms and prepares them for their royal duties.
When the workers have chosen an egg or larva, harbinger of a queen that may eventually reign over them, they tear down the walls of the cell in which the candidate lies and start building a queen cell around her. When completed, a queen cell, made of wax and usually attached to the side of the comb, resembles a peanut shell in size, shape and colour. As the princess advances through the larval stage, she is fed by nurse bees. The candidates feed so copiously, they actually float in a sea of royal jelly inside their cell. Royal jelly is a secretion produced by glands in the nurse bee's head. Sixteen days after the egg is laid, the fully matured princess gnaws her way out of her cell to declare her sovereignty.
Once free of her confining quarters, she sounds a high-pitched challenge to any other pretenders who may be ready to contest her right to be queen. Customarily, the workers nominate more than one candidate to strive for the high office of ruling monarch and build several queen cells at about the same time. The first princess to emerge rushes to those queen cells from which come answers to her challenge; tearing the cells to shreds, she stings her competitors to death. These assassinations continue until all her rivals have been vanquished, after which she takes a well-earned rest, then swiftly walks about on an inspection tour of her domain. She is not yet accepted by her sisters, they do not crowd around her, she must first prove herself by returning from a successful nuptial flight.
Four to ten days after her victory over her rivals, the surviving princess prepares for her wedding flight. On a bright, sunshiny day she takes wing, to mate, high in the air, with the fastest flying drone of those who pursue her. He couples with her in mid-air, dying in the act, actually exploding and depositing millions of spermatozoa in a pouch within the bride's body. The queen seldom mates more than once in her lifetime, thereafter becoming both mother and father to all the eggs she may lay . . .
Arriving home, she is immediately surrounded by the royal attendants who take care of her every need from now on. They wash, clean, massage, comb, feed her.
The new queen starts laying within forty-eight hours after mating. She inspects each cell carefully to see that it is properly cleaned and polished. Having satisfied herself that a cell is ready to receive an egg, she straddles the cell, inserts her long slender abdomen into it and leaves a single egg. Even during the few seconds required to lay an egg, the queen's royal ladies-in-waiting groom and feed her.
The endless round of egg laying is repeated over and over for the rest of the queen's life . . . A queen may lay millions of eggs in her lifetime. She controls the sex of each egg by touching it with a speck of the father's sperm to produce a sterile female worker or withholding the sperm to produce a drone. But she does not decide when or how many eggs to lay. This decision is made by the nurses. When there is sufficient pollen being harvested to feed the larvae, the nurses stuff the queen with royal jelly and she continues to lay at top speed.

Since the birth of the cats, her canine friend had been included in the family life. He often stood guard over the litter. She brought the dog face to face with her kittens, then walked with him to where she was making her new nest. then walked with him back to her litter. Although the dog seemed baffled, the mother cat left to continue preparing the nest. The dog did show up in the new nest, but without kittens. The mother cat led him to the old nest a second time. This time, the dog got her silent message. Going against all his instincts, he gently picked up and carried each kitten, moving the fitter to its new home.
This is an instructive example of inter-species psychic communication.
Of course to an expert, the cat explained her request to the dog through body language, but without a simultaneous telepathic communication the message would not have been complete nor would it have been understood. Clearly, the cat was able to transplant a visual image into the consciousness of her canine friend, a detailed and consecutive series of images which would at once encourage the dog to do a difficult thing and give him exact instructions on how to do it.

On a more crucial level, cats have been recorded as having sensed the presence of death and of predicting all manner of disasters. The British, who in World War 11 endured the Luftwaffe's bombs, learned to depend on their cats. It was widely observed that cats had a foreknowledge of bombing raids. In the area of animal heroism there seem to be many more recorded cases of dogs reaching out to save human or animal life than stories about cats. Quite simply, the cat's relatively small size makes its heroism less conspicuous. And the cat's reputation for unconcern with human affairs can lead people to ignore their warnings. If a dog senses danger it can, if need be, intervene directly. It can drag a child from a burning house, tug his master forcefully by the sleeve.
But the cat can only give signs and make small noises. Also, the cat's nature is not as similar to our own as is the dog's. While the cat can of course be loved and even worshipped, it is harder to identify with than the dog is. Few cat lovers can look at a pet and think: He's just like me! Even physically, where a dog may take on a striking resemblance to his owner, the cat will remain ever himself, will make only the most necessary modulations in his behaviour so that he may communicate with his master. Cats have no intention of surrendering their individuality. They are supremely (and inspiringly) confident of themselves, of their completeness, of -their profound understanding of the universal order.
However, when a cat needs to communicate it seems to make no difference who the listener is - the cat will try and will often succeed in getting the message across. W. A. Hudson tells the story of a cat who was raised with a puppy who became her closest friend. This cat was unusually small. When she had a litter of kittens, she found it difficult to carry them in her mouth. This does not mean that the cat is not a suitable or a loving pet. If you are going to have a truly close relationship with your cat, you must adopt your cat's ways of communication - and these are almost wholly psychic. An English magazine called Tomorrow reports the same kind of phenomenon, but having to do with a cat's sensing a human's psychic distress call. A cat named Bill, devoted to his master, stayed home while his owner went traveling some distance. The man, badly hurt in a railway accident died in a hospital a few days later.
He was buried near the hospital, and at the interment the man's brother saw Bill there.
Bill, the faithful and clairvoyant cat, had known what - had happened and had made the journey to be near his master. The cat went to the edge of the grave, looked at the coffin, and then, sadly, turned and went back home.
Since humans first stood face to face and looked long into the eyes of the feline, with its vertical pupil and endless multicoloured depth, the cat has reminded us of the supernatural. The cat has always been associated with those parts of the universe which we humans fail to understand. When humans were closer to and still more or less remembered their animal (psychic) origins, it was not at all uncommon for psychic animals to be worshipped as gods.
Dogs, crocodiles species of birds, were all taken to represent the universal order and the hidden, secret powers of the universe. But no animal has been worshipped quite so fervently as the cat. In ancient Egypt, anyone known to have killed a cat was himself put to death.
For some, the quiet, secret grace of the cat may have been emblematic of all that was unknown in the universe; others may have been able to actually plumb the depths of the feline character, discovering all kinds of marvellous and astounding powers. It is interesting to note that as we drifted further and further from our origins further from the animal kingdom, and developed our rational, logical explanations of the universe, worship of animals turned into fear of animals.
Medieval communities literally lived in dread of the wilderness that surrounded them. (See Chapter 11 on animal transformation for a more detailed look at this fear.) Animal nature, rather than being looked up to and learned from, became synonymous with godlessness and depravity. The cat, once placed upon a pedestal and revered for its psychic powers and infinite grace, w;; transformed into an evil omen; frightening creature of the nigh: companion of the devil and the devil's handmaidens, witches. The night patrolled by the cat was the night of the human unconscious; the psychological space the cat stalked was that of the innate psychic powers which humans had abandoned within themselves as they rushed headlong into the modern age.
But while we may have suffered from the evolutionary drift away from our psychic powers, the most common housecat impresses us as being not very different from his ancient ancestors. Ages of living with humans seem to have changed the cat very little. Perhaps the cat intuitively knew the dangers of domesticity and has, therefore, always kept part of himself in reserve. Even the pudgiest, most pampered show-cat lets us know in a hundred different ways that he is still an untamed psychic creature, that he still primarily obeys a higher authority

The Gaddises, who have done a great service to the investigation into the secret world of animals through their writings, report a cat whose sense of human time helped the United States effort during World War 11. This cat belonged to the governor of Idaho, whose wartime duty it was to make certain that local high school students showed up daily in the potato fields. When the governor's alarm clock broke, he found he didn't need a new one. His cat immediately assumed the unfailing responsibility of waking the governor every morning at seven o'clock sharp.
Dr Gustav Eckstein of the University of Cincinnati relates the story of Willy, a feline strangely fascinated by the game of Bingo. Every Monday evening Willy would leave home at precisely seven thirty, trot across town to the hospital where the Bingo games were held, and stay until nine forty-five, at which time he thought he should be heading home. Willy's fascination with the game of Bingo is interesting in itself, but his sense of a weekly schedule is truly amazing.

But now, because my schedule was keeping me away from home more and more, I decided to find Alex a feline friend. I got Alex a little kitten to avoid contests that seem inevitable between grown cats. Alex thought this was a perfectly wonderful idea and he took to `Monk' immediately. Monk, an energetic tabby, looked up to Alex and it was a great pleasure to see them wrestling together, and staring at the things which only cats seem to see. For a while, I feared I might be excluded, but this was not the case. Alex was still fast friends with me.
One Saturday morning, I had to go to the drugstore and Alex, of course, came along. When I went inside, Alex, as usual, waited outside the door. A few minutes later, I noticed Alex was in the store, running down the aisle towards me in a state of tremendous agitation. Meowing loudly, his tail flicking like a whip, he stood before me. I didn't know if I was imagining ii, but his eyes seemed bright with fear. I quickly put my purchase back on the shelf, picked up Alex, and took him outside. When I put him down, he began pacing back and forth, meowing louder and louder. Then he began to run - in the opposite direction from our house. He stopped: - in his tracks, meowed at me, and waited.
I knew Alex usually had a reason for doing the things he did and e so I followed him. Alex took me further and further from our house-, until we came to a yard. He darted into the yard and crawled under an old, white frame house. I followed him, got on my knees, and tried to see what he was so concerned about.
When my eves adjusted to the darkness, I saw Alex standing there over the motionless Monk. I reached under the building and laid my hand on Monk's chest. He was still breathing, but only slightly. There was blood on him; he'd been struck by a car.
I wish this story had a happy ending - but there was no saving the poor kitten. Yet my already immense respect for Alex grew even greater. How had he known the moment when disaster befell his friend Monk? What psychic distress signals had he received? And, if I had been more open, would I have `heard' Monk, too?

In fact, I thought his survival mechanisms must have been a little off because he hadn't chosen a very likely candidate in his search for a suitable human companion. As time went on, and I met with no success in finding his true owners, a curious but deniable soft spot for my little grey visitor appeared in my heart. Yet I was still determined to make his stay temporary.
Finally, I found a family who wanted Alex and I carried him the two blocks to their house. We said goodbye and I went off to my classes. When I returned home, Alex was waiting for me on the window sill. He ran down to greet me, making his prrt-prrt, and rubbing his arched back against my legs. I must admit I was glad to see him.
Still, I returned him to the family who'd adopted him and this time I didn't even say goodbye. Alex wasn't fooled by my outward behaviour. He knew I liked him -he knew it better, and even before, I did. That evening he was waiting for me. Again I took him back to the family - who was getting a little bored with the complicated courtship - and this continued for a solid week before I gave in and told Alex he could live with me permanently.
The first thing I learned from Alex was the tremendous affection and fidelity cats are capable of showing. Perhaps it was because he'd been a stray and wasn't happy with the idea of separation; but, in no time, Alex had fitted himself very neatly into my schedule. He followed me to campus every day and, to my surprise, was waiting for me in roughly the same spot each afternoon, though my schedule of classes was changeable. Alex, however, knew when I'd be there. Only once was he late, and I ,could see him streaking towards our spot on the common - like an Olympic runner doing the 500 metres

I grew up in a family in which everyone liked dogs and the only cats we had lived in the barn. I never knew what they did there, except to catch mice and to sleep beneath the cows' noses on the coldest nights so they might be warmed by the soft, bovine breath. While I had a certain affection for cats, I also had the usual misconceptions about the feline spies which people who have not studied cats often have. I thought them disloyal, aloof, basically uninterested in human affairs. I don't exactly know what this says about me, but I wasn't terribly anxious to have a pet who was not loyal to me.

Remember representational systems? The idea that humans think in images, sounds, and feelings? While we're calling up images (a process called accessing), we're not able to look at what's going on in front of us. While we're listening to music, we're not able to remember our favorite song. While we're feeling our shoulders for tension, we're not aware of the touch of cloth against our skin. Seeing with the mind's eye and the physical eye are mutually exclusive processes. In Neuro Linguistic Programming, accessing -- thinking -- is called downtime, and obersving with the senses is labelled uptime. I run uptime as a meditation. Try this: for three minutes, look at the colors in front of you, the textures of surfaces, shapes... listen to the volume and pitch of all sounds in your vicinity... feel the surface you're sitting on, your hand touching something in front of you... The next time you generate an internal image, talk to yourself, feel your stomach tightening -- notice the difference. It's the difference between accessing and observing, downtime and uptime, external and internal reality. One thing that I notice about uptime is that it links to the concept 'sacred'. When I take a walk by the river, I watch the water rippling over rocks, listen to the white noise of the current, feel the moist air touching my skin. I bring myself out of my own internal creations and allow myself to live in the world. Another thing I notice about uptime is that some people don't do it very much. Most of us drop into internal reality when our environment is unpleasant, and that's a very useful thing to be able to do. But then a lot of people forget to come back out-- come to their senses, literally -- and experience the world again. Such people are very difficult to talk to. When I have a conversation, I like my partner to be listening to what I say, and watching my body language. More often, my partner is accessing some internal meaning for, or response to, what I'm saying. That internal meaning may or may not have anything to do with what I'm communicating. It isn't possible to observe someone (with all senses) when we're accessing. It isn't possible to achieve rapport with a person we're not observing. One of the bases of magical group workings is rapport between the participants. Try this: the next time you have a conversation about magic, observe your partner. Watch for: body position and gestures. Often people I talk to demonstrate what they feel when they do magic. [A woman describing her circle method moved her hand from her forehead down toward her feet, from shoulder to shoulder, and from her heart straight in front of her -- gesturing the three energy poles a circle creates.] Listen for: sensory descriptions --"I saw, I heard, I felt." Learning to go into uptime at will, and differentiate our representations of reality from our observations, is perhaps the most useful magical skill we can posess. It provides the basis for a reality check; it helps us communicate our experiences more effectively to others, and to help them duplicate what we do; and it is one of the most profound alterations of conasciousness.

In studying magic I've been exposed to a lot of related fields--history, mythology, music--which enrich my understanding of my vocation. One of the most helpful series of books I've encountered is a set of five volumes starting with The Structure of Magic I. and II. which focus on... psychology. John Grinder and Richard Bandler developed the field they called Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP. One reason I suggest everyone I know become familiar with it is that they've taught this stuff to salespeople, managers, Pentagon employees... I see their techniques on television commercials and read about them in seminar descriptions. NLP is a people manipulator par excellance, and I think it's important others are made aware of this. Another reason is that it's so incredibly useful. Consider this: "The meaning of a communication is the response you get." In their terms, an elegant phrase. It's changed my entire relationship with others. If I don't make myself clear, I don't blame the listener. I restate my case, maybe trying a different body language, a different representa-tional system, a little pacing... Representational system? Well, what senses do we use to explore the world? Sight--hearing--touch, and taste and smell to a much lesser extent. So how do we think? In images, sounds and feelings--or, in NLP terms, in visual, auditory and kinesthetic representational systems. What's interesting is that we all make images and sounds and feelings to store experience, but we're usually only conscious of using ONE system. The words we choose to describe our experi ences reflect that: "I'm not very fo cused and I can't see what you're saying." Or, "I've got a handle on the feeling that's been bugging me." Or, "I hear that, it sounds like it will work." Spend one hour listening to people and you can verify this. Now, if I say, "I just can't feel good about that," and the person I'm talking to says "I don't see what's wrong with it," my communication hasn't received the response I want. If I switch to my partner's most favored representational system and say, "Let me make that clear to you. It looks like a really bad situation," that's one way to match, or pace my partner. See what I mean? Or maybe that gives you a feel for thepower of this particular "psychology".What does any of this have to do with paganism or magic? For starters, I wonder how many circle conflicts could be solved by something as simple as accomodating each other's most favored rep. system. In a working circle, is someone having trouble visualizing a goal? Is someone else very good at constructing mental temples, but totally unable to feel when to release the energy? Put them together, get them to trade notes and teach each other; both skills are part of the same experience. When you direct rituals, do you always include something to see or imagine, hear or sing, feel--in the body or tactually? Do your rituals work for some people and not others? The dreadful results of the tribulation are graphicallyportrayed in the Book of Revelation and will not be described indetail here. There are many good books which can go into detailfor those interested, but the end result is the loss of billionsof lives through famine, war, and natural disasters. Using thenumbers given in Revelation applied to the population of theearth today, this would result in the loss of four billion lives- truly a horrible picture. The Antichrist will persecute the Jews and the Christianswho will turn to Christ during that period. There will be someleft at the beginning of the Tribulation who refuse to worshipthe beast and receive his number. These were mentioned in thebeginning of this discussion. According to Revelation, an untoldnumber will accept Christ during this time and receivepersecution from the Antichrist and his followers - persecutioneven unto death. As the end draws near, Jesus will return as Hepromised, swiftly taking care of the Antichrist and his cohorts:Revelation 19:19,20 - "Then I saw the beast (the Antichrist) andthe kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to makewar against the rider on the horse and his. But the beast wascaptured, and with him the false prophet who had performed themiraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deludedthose who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped hisimage. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake ofburning sulfur." At this juncture, the mid-point of the seven-yeartribulation, the true tribulation events begin. Until now, theprior three and a half years have been very calm. Our God is a merciful, kind God whogives every man every chance to repent and change his heart if itdoes not conform to the Word of God. By searching the scriptures, we can paint a mosaic of thepersonality of this end time figure. A troubled society producesthe atmosphere for a dictator, and his personality will draw mostof the people of the world to him. We are told in Daniel that hewill be a master of intrigue, he will succeed in whatever hedoes, he will be completely wicked and "stern-faced", and he willdestroy many: Daniel 8:23-25 - "In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a stern-faced king, a master of intrigue, will arise. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men and the holy people. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power." However, it must be understood that when this man appears,he will not appear "stern-faced" at the beginning. He willappear the opposite - a man of peace, love, and concern for theworld. His emergence will be that of a benevolent dictator, withthe unity of mankind most likely being his theme. He will appearas the Savior who is promised or vaguely imagined in allconfessions and traditions, who will judge according to themeasure of worldly people. Everything about this great deceiverwill be so good, reasonable, and acceptable that one will have tohave very good reason and a lot of courage to remain calm andnegative about him against all public opinion and against awhirlwind of enthusiasm. He will be the epitome of deceptionand his machinations will not be realized by the world until hisreign is half completed. It is difficult to not compare him withHitler, another dictator of our time. When he first came topower, he so mesmerized the people of his time and country thatthey literally worshipped him. Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things. And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way." What is this "one who now holds it back" which will need tobe taken out of the way? Many have said that it is the HolySpirit which will be removed from the earth at the time of therapture of the church. This would leave evil in the worldunopposed by the Spirit of God, so evil would then become rampantand cause the world of lawlessness and rebellion described as thetime of the end. Theologically, I question this, although I usedto ascribe to that theory. Rather, I believe the Holy Spiritwill still be on earth to guide and comfort the "great multitude"of Revelation 7:14 who will come to salvation out of the greattribulation. Regardless, the time of the Antichrist iscontrolled by God, and he will not come forth until the stage isready in God's plan.

M. figuier in his "L'Alchimie et les Alchimistes",dealing with the subject of modern alchemy, as expressed by theinitiates of the first half of the nineteenth century, states that manyFrench alchemists of his time regarded the discoveries of modern scienceas merely so many evidences of the truth of the doctrines they embraced. Throughout Europe, he says, the positive alchemical doctrine had manyadherents at the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of thenineteenth. Thus a "vast association of alchemists", founded inWestphalia in 1790, continued to flourish in the year 1819, under thename of the "Hermetic Society". In 1837, an alchemist of Thuringiapresented to the Societe Industrielle of Weimar a tincture which heaverred would effect metallic transmutation. About the same timeseveral French journals announced a public course of lectures onhermetic philosophy by a professor of the University of Munich. Hefurther states that many Honoverian and Bavarian families pursued incommon the search for the grand arcanum. Paris, however, was regardedas the alchemical Mecca. There dwelt many theoretical alchemists and"empirical adepts". The first pursued and arcanum through the medium ofbooks, the other engaged in practical efforts to effect transmutation. M. Figuier states that in the forties of the last century hefrequented the laboratory of a certain Monsieur L., which was therendezvous of the alchemists in Paris. When Monsieur L`s pupils leftthe laboratory for the day, the modern adepts dropped in one by one, andFiguier relates how deeply impressed he was by the appearance andcostumes of these strange men. In the daytime, he frequentlyencountered them in the public libraries, buried in gigantic folios, andin the evening they might be seen pacing the solitary bridges with eyesfixed in vague contemplation upon the first pale stars of night. A longcloak usually covered the meager limbs, and their untrimmed beards andmatted locks lent them a wild appearance. They walked with a solemn andmeasured gait, and used the figures of speech employed by the medievalillumines. Their expression was generally a mixture of the most ardenthope and fixed despair. Among the adepts who sought the laboratory of Monsieur L., Figuier remarked especially a young man, in whose habitsand language he could nothing in common with those of his strangecompanions. He confounded the wisdom of the alchemical adept with thetenets of the modern scientist in the most singular fashion, and meetinghim one day at the gate of the Observatory, M. Figuier renewed thesubject of their last discussion, deploring that " a man of his giftscould pursue the semblance of a chimera." Without replying, the youngadept led him into the Observatory garden, and proceeded to reveal tohim the mysteries of modern alchemical science. The young man proceeded to fix a limit to the researches of the modernalchemists. Gold, he said, according to the ancient authors, as threedistinct properties: (1) that of resolving the baser metals into itself,and interchanging and metamorphosing all metals into one another; (2)the curing of afflictions and the prolongation of life; (3), as a'spiritus mundi' to bring mankind into rapport with the supermundanespheres. Modern alchemists, he continued, reject the greater part ofthese ideas, especially those connected with spiritual contact. Theobject of modern alchemy might be reduced to the search for a substancehaving the power to transform and transmute all other substances intoone another - in short, to discover that medium so well known to thealchemists of old and lost to us. This was a perfectly feasibleproposition. In the four principal substances of oxygen, hydrogen,carbon, and azote, we have the tetractus of Pythagoras and the tetragramof the Chaldeans and Egyptians. All the sixty elements are referable tothese original four. The ancient alchemical theory established the factthat all the metals are the same in their composition, that all areformed from sulphur and mercury, and that the difference between them isaccording to the proportion of these substances in their composition. Further, all the products of minerals present in their compositioncomplete identity with those substances most opposed to them. Thusfulminating acid contains precisely the same quantity of carbon, oxygen,and azote as cyanic acid, and "cyanhydric" acid does not differ fromformate ammoniac. This new property of matter is known as "isomerism". M. Figuier's friend then proceeds to quote support of his thesis and operations and experiments of M. Dumas, a celebrated French savant, asis well known to thous of Prout, and other English chemists of standing. Passing to consider the possibility of isomerism in elementary as wellas in compound substances, the points out to M. Figuier that id thetheory of isomerism can apply to such bodies, the transmutation ofmetals ceases to be a wild, unpractical dream, and becomes a scientificpossibility, the transformation being brought about by a molecularrearrangement. Isomerism can be established in the case of compoundsubstances by chemical analysis. showing the identity of theirconstituent parts. In the case of metals it can be proved by thecomparison of the properties of isometric bodies with the properties ofmetals, in order to discover whether they have any commoncharacteristics. Such experiments, he continued, had been conducted byM. Dumas, with the result the isometric substances were to be found tohave equal equivalents, or equivalents which were exact multiples of oneanother. This characteristic is also a feature of metals. Gold andosmium have identical equivalents, as have platinum and iridium. Theequivalent of cobalt is almost the same as that of nickel, and thesemi-equivalent of tin is equal to the equivalent of the two precedingmetals. M. Dumas. speaking before the British Association, had shown that whenthree simple bodies displayed great analogies in their properties, suchas chlorine, bromide, and iodine, barium, strontium, and calcium, the chemical equivalent of the intermediate body is represented by thearithmetical mean between the equivalents of the other two. Such astatement well showed the isomerism of elementary substances, and provedthat metals, however dissimilar in outward appearance, were composed ofthe same matter differently arranged and proportioned. This theorysuccessfully demolishes the difficulties in the way of transmutation. Again, Dr. Prout says that the chemical equivalents of nearly allelemental substances are the multiples of one among them. Thus, if theequivalent of hydrogen be taken for the unit, the equivalent of everyother substance will be an exact multiple of it - carbon will berepresented by six, axote by fourteen, oxygen by sixteen, zink bythirty-two. But, pointed out M. Figuier's friend, if the molecularmasses in compound substances have so simple a connection, does it notgo to prove the all natural bodies are formed of one principle,differently arranged and condensed to produce all known compounds? If transmutation is thus theoretically possible, it only remains toshow by practical experiment that it is strictly in accordance withchemical laws, and by no means inclines to the supernatural. At thisjuncture the young alchemist proceeded to liken the action of thePhilosopher`s Stone on metals to that of a ferment on organic matter. When metals are melted and brought to red heat, a molecular change maybe produced analogous to fermentation. Just as sugar, under theinfluence of a ferment, may be changed into lactic acid without alteringits constituents, so metals can alter their character under theinfluence of the Philosopher`s Stone. The explanation of the lattercase is no more difficult than that of the former. The ferment does nottake any part in the chemical changes it brings about, and nosatisfactory explanation of its effects can be found either in the lawsof affinity or in the forces of electricity, light, or heat. As withthe ferment, the required quantity of the Philosopher`s Stone isinfinitesimal. Medicine, philosophy, every modern science was at onetime a source of such errors and extravagances as are associated withmedieval alchemy, but they are not therefore neglected and despised. Wherefore, then, should we be blind tot he scientific nature oftransmutation? One of the foundations of alchemical theories was that minerals grewand developed in the earth, like organic things. It was always the aimof nature to produce gold, the most precious metal, but whencircumstances were not favorable the baser metals resulted. The desireof the old alchemists was to surprise nature`s secrets, and thus attainthe ability to do in a short period what nature takes years toaccomplish. Nevertheless, the medieval alchemists appreciated the valueof time in their experiments as modern alchemists never do. M.Figuier`s friend urged him not to condemn these exponents of thehermetic philosophy for their metaphysical tendencies, for, he said,there are facts in our sciences that can only be explained in thatlight. If, for instance, copper be placed in air or water, there willbe no result, but if a touch of some acid be added, it will oxidize. The explanation is that "the acid provokes oxidation of the metalbecause it has an affinity for the oxide which tends to form." - amaterial fact most metaphysical in its production, and only explicablethereby.

The grand objects of alchemy were (1) thediscovery of a process by which the baser metals might be transmutedinto gold or silver; (2) the discovery of an elixir by which life mightbe prolonged indefinitely; and there may be added (3), the manufactureof and artificial process of human life. (for the latter see Homunculus) THE THEORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF ALCHEMY: The first objects were to beachieved as follows: The transmutation of metals was to be accomplishedby a powder, stone or exilir often called the Philosopher`s Stone, theapplication of which would effect the transmutation of the baser metalsinto gold or silver, depending upon the length of time of itsapplication. Basing their conclusions on a profound examination ofnatural processes and research into the secrets of nature, thealchemists arrived at the axiom that nature was divided philosophicallyinto four principal regions, the dry, the moist, the warm, the cold,whence all that exists must be derived. Nature is also divisible intothe male and the female. She is the divine breath, the central fire,invisible yet ever active, and is typified by sulphur, which is themercury of the sages, which slowly fructifies under the genial warmth ofnature. The alchemist must be ingenuous, of a truthful disposition, andgifted with patience and prudence, following nature in every alchemicalperformance. He must recollect that like draws to like, and must knowhow to obtain the seed of metals, which is produced by the four elementsthrough the will of the Supreme Being and the Imagination of Nature. The base metals made use ofmust be purified to insure the success of the operation. The processfor the manufacture of silver is essentially similar, but the resourcesof the matter are not carried to so high a degree. "According to the "Commentary on the Ancient War of the Knights" thetransmutations performed by the perfect stone are so absolute that notrace remains of the original metal. It cannot, however, destroy gold,nor exalt it into a more perfect metallic substance; it, therefore,transmutes it into a medicine a thousand times superior to any virtueswhich can be extracted from its vulgar state. This medicine becomes amost potent agent in the exaltation of base metals." There are not wanting authorities who deny that the transmutations ofmetals was the grand object of alchemy, and who infer from thealchemistical writings that the end of the art was the spiritualregeneration of man. Mrs. Atwood, author of "A Suggestive Inquiry intothe Hermetic Mystery", and an American writer named Hitchcock arepurhaps the chief protagonists of the belief the by spiritual processesakin to those of the chemical process of alchemy, the soul of man may bepurified and exalted. The Arabs, after their conquest of Egypt in the seventh century,carried on the researches of the Alexandrian school, and through theirinstrumentality the art was brought to Morocco and thus in the eighthcentury to Spain, where it flourished exceedingly. Indeed, Spain fromthe ninth to the eleventh century became the repository of alchemicscience, and the colleges of Seville, Cordova and Granada were thecenters from which this science radiated throughout Europe. The first practical alchemist may be said to have been the ArbianGeber, who flourished 720-750. From his "Summa Perfectionis", we may bejustified in assuming that alchemical science was already matured in hisday, and that he drew his inspirations from a still older unbroken lineof adepts. He was followed by Avicenna, Mesna and Rhasis, and in Franceby Alain of Lisle, Arnold de Villanova and Jean de Meung the troubadour;in England by Roger Bacon and in Spain itself by Raymond Lully. Incredible as it may seem, astrology was persecuted earlier this century in the Western World. England's Alan Leo had to pay 30 in fines and court costs in 1917 (ca. $1,500 today). But an American contemporary fared much better. It all started in 1899, when with Saturn and Uranus transiting her M.C., Jersey City born and Boston resident Evangeline Adams decided it was a good time to move to New York City. She read the chart of the owner of the hotel she planned to stay in on March 16 and predicted imminent disaster. On St. Patrick's Day Warren Leonardi's Windsor Hotel burned to the ground. He admitted she had predicted it; the press headlined it; Ms. Adams was on her way to fame. That was too much for the skeptics, and she was summoned to court on basis of an old state law equating astrologers with those "who pretend to tell fortunes."2 She refused to have the case thrown out of court. Judge Freschi gave her the data for a chart to interpret; she accurately read the personality of his honor's son, and the judge cheerfully admitted that "the defendant raises astrology to the dignity of an exact science."3 Astrology now became legal in New York, then the nation's "trend setter." The defendant rejoiced: "I have Mars conjunct my natal Sun in the 12th house. I will always triumph over my enemies."4 She now began to make a host of famous friends. Her Carnegie Hall studio in the heart of the city was visited by English royalty and the likes of Enrico Caruso, Mary Pickford and J. P. Morgan. In 1930 she started a thrice weekly radio program; mail poured in at the rate of 4,000 pieces a day. She surprised her public by turning down a travel tour for the fall of '32. Did she really know that she would then depart this plane? Her chart contains two patterns, indicator of an advanced ego, as also the fact that two of her New Age planets are angular.5 It is a Seesaw, two groups of planets separated by sextiles. She could view things from all sides. This is underscored by this also being a Full Moon map, bringing added awareness. All the more since the two lights are drawn even closer together by belonging to a ring (mutual reception of more than two planets) with Uranus, "patron planet" of the celestial science. Straddling the Ascendant is a cluster of seven planets compressed within 94 degrees. This is the natus of a talented person uniquely drawn to the public. The Sun may be in the "weak" 12th house, but one way or another it is connected with all the other planets.6 This is also a bucket  one planet at least a sextile from all others. It is Saturn, on the 9th cusp of the higher mind, dominating the entire chart, also co-ruler of the Sun sign and in a critical degree.7 Ms. Adams was a highly disciplined lady. We must never lose sight of the fact that one's capacity for discipline reflects one's progress on the Path.8 Students of astrology must be truly disciplined, from within, for there is no control over them from without. Anciently, they were "regulated"; Daniel was a "master of. . . astrologers."9 But today, the astrological community prefers to regulate itself, but as newsman Paul Harvey repeatedly reminds his listeners regarding mundane matters: self-government without self-discipline won't work. There are diverse kinds of discipline. Our Lord in the Sermon on the Mount spoke of a discipline consisting of activity whose "rewards were wholly in secret. He spoke of prayer and giving,10 but the principle also applies to those who would use the wisdom of the stars to serve mankind. To do the utmost good, astrologers must continue to labor at perfecting their skill even if inclined to think they could "get by" with less, that "nobody" would know the difference. Not on earth, perhaps. But rivalling Saturn's strength in her chart is Neptune  ruler, final dispositor, in a critical degree, cardinal sign and angular house. It is also lord of the most occupied sign, Pisces, with three planets and the Ascendant, and natural ruler of the most heavily tenanted house, the 12th. Its sign is also that of the sign signature, indicating compassion, sympathy, and understanding. It is noteworthy that at her funeral the preacher did not dwell on her skill or fame; he "commented on Miss Adams' 'love and understanding' of her fellow man."11 Dale Carnegie, in his classic "How to Win Friends and Influence People," claimed that sympathy and understanding is "what everybody wants."12 Of course it is no substitute for skill in reading the stars, but a necessary adjunct. The identical facts can be presented as encouragement or the very opposite. Esotericist Nicholas Roerich called him "a world spirit."2 He has been compared to Beethoven and Da Vinci.3 Renown philosopher George Santayana hailed him as "the wisest of mankind."4 One edition of his works consists of 143 octavo volumes, for he "never stopped writing, from his childhood,"5 which began when, as he noted, "at noon on the 28th of August, on the stroke of twelve, I came into the world at Frankfurt-am-Main,"6 and also; "The Sun stood in the sign of the virgin, and had culminated for the day; Jupiter and Venus had a friendly aspect, Mercury not an adverse one; Saturn and Mars were neutral; only the Moon, which was just full, exercised her counteracting power."7 In view of the aforesaid, it would be easy to call Goethe a Virgo. But the Moon had not been in the virgin's sign since the previous New Moon, hence the solar-lunar "wedding" had not taken place and the Sun also partook of Leo's nature.8 We also note that Leo is an intercepted sign, weakening its assertiveness, confirmed by the fact that "this man, so humble by nature, could not endure hero worship."9 His diffident deportment despite imperial insolence in his October 2, 1808, interview with Napoleon also was non-Leonian.10 What sign does he "belong" to? Could it be that being a "world spirit," rising above narrow nationalism, he "mystically" also rose above "signs"? We note the strength of the New Age planets in his natus, indicative of much soul experience."12 Uranus is in its own sign, in dignity. Neptune in Cancer is exalted, in its own decan in a critical degree, and by dint of its location in the 9th house emitting "a higher vibration."13 It is part of a grand trine in water with Saturn and Jupiter and in a ring with no less than seven planets  all but Uranus and Venus. After all, can one really be a poet or lyricist without a strong Neptune? Music was in his soul: "I can always work better after I have been listening to music."14 He also "was most sensitive. He could not tolerate din; street noises were a torture to him; he had an aversion to the barking of dogs; he avoided. . . blare."15 That Pluto of his! Surely the spring of 1803 was a most benefic time for America. In April the Louisiana Territory, called the biggest real estate bargain of all time, was acquired, greatly enlarging its boundaries. And in May there was born in New England one destined to become a New Age pioneer. Even the pulpit of one of the most forward-looking churches was not sufficiently progressive for him. He resigned, and travelled to Europe to meet some of its avant garde thinkers like Wordsworth, Carlyle, Coleridge. On returning, he founded (in 1836) with Margaret Fuller, Henry Thoreau, and others, the movement that came to be known as Transcendentalism, no doubt the nation's most influential New Age initiative of the time. At first glance, his chart does not appear at all unique. It seems to be just another Splash pattern with the planets scattered in seven signs. He himself is credited with the saying that concentration is genius' essence, yet his own planetary energies seem widely dispersed. (Of course he also said that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.) For his activity was broadly focused: he travelled, wrote, and lectured widely, yet he was a genius nevertheless. Our big clue to understanding his chart is in the 3rd house. Neptune is closely conjunct the Part of Fortune; this symbolic point's closest aspect often points to where the emphasis is. The configuration's meaning: "A sense of participation in vast social or spiritual movements."1 It is well to remember that in charts where Neptune is prominent, much is submerged, subtly concealed. After all, Neptune is "monarch" of the maritime; we must look deeply. In doing so, we find Neptune and Pluto in mutual reception. Uranus' solstice point is also with them: all the three New Age planets are together in the 6th house of work. Too, they are linked by (minor) aspects. Uranus and Neptune form a semi-square; Neptune and Pluto a biseptile (103 degrees, small orb allowed) of destiny. The extra-Saturnian orbs are very strongly interconnected, even though in a somewhat concealed, typically Neptunian manner. They have congregated in Neptune's sign that, greatly increasing its importance. Even though Gemini is the Sun sign and chart signature, Pisces is the real basis of Emerson's achievements. We have his own words for this: "The greatest genius is he who offers fewest obstacles to the illumination from above."2 Pisces is the sign most capable of self-abnegation, giving itself away. Only an empty vessel can be filled. How regrettable that the sign of the fishes is at times referred to with such disparaging remarks as "dustbin of the zodiac" when potentially it is most capable of responding to divine dynamics. This goes along with the 8th cusp of regeneration, bringing out the best, whose degree symbol is "An empty hammock."3 Nature  incidentally, this is the brief title of the book that helped launch Transcendentalism  abhors a vacuum. It will eventually be filled by something, in the spiritual realm either by demons or divinity.4 Surely Emerson emptied his own "hammock," or vessel, for an inflow from above, and with the strength of his New Age planets as noted above, his bent was to respond to their positive vibrations. All the more because we also glimpse two Finger of God configurations. Even one in a chart is quite rare; what comment would be adequate when there are two? Especially when their components are so exquisitely harmonious? In one, Venus, Jupiter, and Neptune are all in some way tied to Pisces: Venus is exalted therein, the other two orbs dignified. In the other, Mars, Uranus, and Pluto are all related to Scorpio: Uranus is exalted, the other two dignified. The more harmonious the components of a configuration, the greater its potential. The apexes of the two figures of destiny are in the 6th and 8th houses; esoteric work was his appointed assignment. And esoteric astrology further helps explain his success. In addition to the regular mutual reception already noted, he has an esoteric one. Venus is Gemini's esoteric ruler; Mercury that of Aries; they're in each others' signs.5 Hence, special emphasis and relationship. Gemini is the logo of communicating where Emerson excelled. Aries is not only the symbol of forcefulness (here Venus removes abrasiveness), also of simplicity. It was said of a preacher, Six days a week he's invisible, the seventh he's incomprehensible. By contrast, Emerson was highly visible and just as comprehensible, a fact supported by these important degree meanings: The Ascendant: "Vibrant simplicity." The M.C.: "Warmth of simple living." The 12th cusp: "Death of useless things."6 Mercury: "A man trimming palms."7 In the sense of getting rid of the unnecessary, this surely is a step in the direction of simplicity. "Trimming" also implies making something short, brief. Emerson could not be accused of being long-winded. When lecturing, he would put his watch on the lectern and always stop at the time promised. There was a self-authenticating naturalness about Emerson's message. Though rightly called New Age, it was part of the Ageless Wisdom. This is clearly indicated by the chart. Straddling the Ascendant are Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus. The first represents the old, the last the new; since Jupiter is almost exactly in their middle it ties them all together even though no actual aspect exists.9 Emerson once said, "Astrology is astronomy brought to earth and applied to the affairs of men."9 It can similarly be said that the New Age Message is the Ageless Wisdom adapted and applied to this age. --A Probationer

Anonymous low-level informants have for years accused the U.S.government of hiding crashed UFOs. Since these sources are of uncertain reliability, the reports have been largely ignored. Now, however, ufologists must consider the testimony of RobertSarbacher, whose entry in WHO'S WHO consists of more than 3 inches of tiny print, including education at Princeton and Harvard and a stint as dean of the graduate school of the GeorgiaInstitute of Technology. In the years after WWII, the story goes, Sarbacher served as a science consultant for the DefenseDepartment's Joint Research and Development Board. He was inhis Washington office on September 15, 1950, it seems, when hereceived a visit from Canadian electrical engineer Wilbert B. Smith. According to information released by Smith just recently,it was then that Sarbacher revealed the existence of crashed UFOs, apparently under investigation by Vannevar Bush, the government's top scientist.

In a recent interview, Sarbacher, now head of the Washington Institute of Technology, confirmed those remarks. He says that during his period of government service as one of a number of government scientists who served largely as volunteers, he was told that the vehicles were composed of an "extremely light and very tough" material, apparently intended to withstand tremendous acceleration and deceleration. At one point, Sarbacher says, he was even invited to a meeting at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where officials related their findings to scientists connected with the Research and Development Board. Sarbacher had other commitments and did not attend the meeting, but he says that those who did, including Bush and noted mathematician John von Neumann, were told that the vehicles appeared to be spaceships from another solar system.

Asked about his reaction to the episode, Sarbacher seems oddly blase. He admits he hasn't given much thought to a matter mostpeople would consider extraordinary -- he considers it simply acurious event in the course of a long scientific career. "Afterall," he says, "I had -- and have -- a great many more pressingscientific responsibilities. I wish I could refer you to someonewho was more directly involved than I was," he adds. "Unfortunately, they're all long gone."

Writer William Moore, who has been chasing government UFO secretsfor years, considers Sarbacher's testimony significant. Advances in astronomy and physics have given renewed support to theconcept that planets are not rare exceptions, but are a natural partof the star formation process and may number in the hundreds ofmillions in our galaxy alone. [In December 1984, the National ScienceFoundation announced that a team of Arizona astronomers had detected apossible solar system around Beta Pictoris, a star 53 light years fromEarth.] Recent biological experiments applying natural energy sourcesto molecules have produced some of the organic building blocks thatmake up the chemistry of life. The 305 meter(1000-ft) diameter radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, coulddetect transmissions from nearby stars that are less powerful butsimilar to our own television and radars. Advances in computers anddata processing techniques now make it possible to searchautomatically through millions of incoming radio signals each secondand, if it is present, to identify a signal transmitted by anintelligent society. The NASA SETI Program is nearing the end of a 5-year research anddevelopment phase, using existing radio telescopes and advancedelectronic techniques to develop prototype SETI instrumentation. Theprogram is being jointly carried out by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) at Pasadena, California, and the NASA Ames Research Center atMoffet Field, California. Leading radio scientists from the nationallaboratories and academic community have also joined together in theSETI Science Working Group to assist the JPL-Ames team in developingthe instrumentation and the search strategy. The proposed plan involves two complementary search modes that aredesigned to cover a range of possibilities. One mode is an all-skysurvey that will search the entire celestial sphere over a widefrequency range (1200 to 10,000 MHz plus spot bands up to 25,000 MHz)to cover the possibility that there may be a few civilizationstransmitting strong signals, possibly as interstellar beacons. Longerobserving times may be allocated to directions that include a largenumber of stars, especially the galactic plane. The radio telescopesemployed will be the 34-meter (112-ft) diameter antennas that are partof NASA's Deep Space Network. The survey will be conducted by movingthe telescope across the sky at a constant rate. It will cover atleast 10,000 times more frequency space than all previous surveyattempts, will be about 300 times more sensitive, and will take about5 years to complete. The second mode is a high-sensitivity targeted search that will lookfor weak signals originating near solar-type stars within 80light-years distance from Earth. The objective is to examine thepossibility that nearby civilizations may have radio transmitters nomore powerful than our own. Some stellar clusters and nearby galaxieswill also be observed. The frequency range covered will be 1200 to3000 MHz plus spot bands between 3000 and 10,000 MHz. To achieve veryhigh sensitivity, the targeted search will use some of the largestradio telescopes available, including the 305-meter (1000-ft) diameterantenna at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and the Deep Space Network's 64-meter(210-ft) diameter antennas. The number of targets covered will be muchlarger than previous searches and the range of frequencies coveredwill be thousands of times greater. The targeted search is expected totake about 3 years to complete. Current astrophysical knowledge and the available technology make theSETI observing program both timely and feasible. Timeliness alsorelates to the rapidly-increasing sources of radio frequencyinterference (RFI) in the microwave band. Portions of the microwavespectrum that directly concern SETI ar subject to allocation tonumerous users worldwide, emphasizing the need to proceed with SETIwhile it remains economically possible with our current technology. Ifthe use of the microwave spectrum continues to increase at its presentrate, the greatest exploration opportunity in the history of mankindmay be placed economically and technologically beyond our reach forthe foreseeable future.

WICCA (sometimes called Wicce, The Craft, or The Old Religion by its practitioners) is an ancient religion of love for life and nature.

In prehistoric times, people respected the great forces of Nature and celebrated the cycles of the seasons and the moon. They saw divinity in the sun and moon, in the Earth Herself, and in all life.

The creative energies of the universe were personified: feminine and masculine principles became Goddesses and Gods. These were not semi-abstract, superhuman figures set apart from Nature: they were embodied in earth and sky, women and men, and even plants and animals.

This viewpoint is still central to present-day Wicca. To most Wiccans, everything in Natures -- and all Goddesses and Gods -- are true aspects of Deity. The aspects most often celebrated in the Craft, however, are thr Triple Goddess of the Moon (Who is Maiden, Mother, and Crone) and the Horned God of the wilds. These have many names in various cultures. Wicca had its organized beginnings in Paleolithic times, co-existed with other Pagan ("country") religions in Europe, and had a profound influence on early Christianity. But in the medieval period, tremendous persecution was directed against the Nature religions by the Roman Church.

Over a span of 300 years, millions of men and women and many children were hanged, drowned or burned as accused "Witches." The Church indicted them for black magic and Satan worship, though in fact these were never a part of the Old Religion.

The Wiccan faith went underground, to be practiced in small, secret groups called "covens." For the most part, it stayed hidden until very recent times. Now scholars such as Margaret Murray and Gerald Gardner have shed some light on the origins of the Craft, and new attitudes of religious freedom have allowed covens in some areas to risk becoming more open.

How do Wiccan folk practice their faith today? There is no central authority or doctrine, and individual covens vary a great deal. But most meet to celebrate on nights of the Full Moon, and at eight great festivals or Sabbats throughout the year.

Though some practice alone or with only their families, many Wiccans are organized into covens of three to thirteen members. Some are led by a High Priestess or Priest, many by a Priestess/Priest team; others rotate or share leadership. Some covens are highly structured and hierarchical, while others may be informal and egalitarian. Often extensive training is required before initiation, and coven membership is considered an important committment.

There are many branches or "traditions" of Wicca in the United States and elsewhere, such as the Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Welsh Traditional, Dianic, Faery, Seax-Wicca and others. All adhere to a code of ethics. None engage in the disreputable practices of some modern "cults," such as isolating and brainwashing impressionable, lonely young people. Genuine Wiccans welcome sisters and brothers, but not disciples, followers or victims.

Coven meetings include ritual, celebration and magick (the "k" is to distinguish it from stage illusions). Wiccan magick is not at all like the instant "special effects" of cartoon shows or fantasy novels, nor medieval demonology; it operates in harmony with natural laws and is usually less spectacular -- though effective. Various techniques are used to heal people and animals, seek guidance, or improve members' lives in specific ways. Positive goals are sought: cursing and "evil spells" are repugnant to practitioners of the Old Religion. Wiccans tend to be strong supporters of environmental protection, equal rights, global peace and religious freedom, and sometimes magick is used toward such goals.

Wiccan beliefs do not include such Judeao-Christian concepts as original sin, vicarious atonement, divine judgement or bodily resurrection. Craft folk believe in a beneficent universe, the laws of karma and reincarnation, and divinity inherent in every human being and all of Nature. Yet laughter and pleasure are part of their spiritual tradition, and they enjoy singing, dancing, feasting, and love.

Wiccans tend to be individualists, and have no central holy book, prophet, or church authority. They draw inspiration and insight from science, and personal experience. Each practitioner keeps a personal book or journal in which s/he records magickal "recipes," dreams, invocations, songs, poetry and so on.

To most of the Craft, every religion has its own valuable perspective on the nature of Deity and humanity's relationship to it: there is no One True Faith. Rather, religious diversity is necessary in a world of diverse societies and individuals. Because of this belief, Wiccan groups do not actively recruit or proseletize: there is an assumption that people who can benefit from the Wiccan way will "find their way home" when the time is right.

Despite the lack of evangelist zeal, many covens are quite willing to talk with interested people, and even make efforts to inform their communities about the beliefs and practices of Wicca.

This may betrue, but it is impossible to prove If the Goddess's priestess didindeed survive in the form of goody-wives and herb-women, theirreligion must have been carefully concealed and cautiously passedon in an oral form.We personally think that though there were indeed pagan tracesleft all over and incorporated into christianity, this doesn'tnecessarily mean that they were Goddess worshippping pagan traces.Patristic paganity had taken over the Goddess worshippping peoplefor more than 1500 years by the start of christianity.Modernly, somewhere in 1940 an English civil servant with apenchant for whipping and bondage, Gerald Gardener, got himself"initiated" into a "New Forest" coven in England. A long-timewitch Sybil Leek, from the New Forest who didn't particularlyappreciate Gerald, confirms it. Once Gardner had his hands on therituals Old Dorothy taught him, he decided that they werefragmentary and needed to be reconstructed. And here we have anodd little problem. Gardner had worked in a Ritual Magician'slodge with Aleister Crowley, a long-time family acquaintance ofSybil Leek's. Crowley was a consumate showman bent on shockingthe public. Sybil was always sad about him, feeling that he hadstrayed from the true path of the Craft, but he was apparentlyborn to one of the hereditary witch families of England. In spiteof this, his Ritual Lodge was based on his interpretations of theMagical Lodge of the Golden Dawn, a tradition started in 1890.Old Dorothy handed to her neophyte, Gardener, the treasured andcared for rituals that she and her coven had preserved for agespast. Gardener decided that the rituals were fragmentary and hiredCrowley to "reconstruct" them. A very public Witchcraft movementwas started by this. Gardener published and got onto TV a lot inthe fifties and sixties. Alex Saunders who managed to steal oneof his books of shadows and start his own Craft current, was knownto the TV media in England as "The King of Witches."These Craft currents were very hierarchical, male dominated(though token bows were given to the women), secretive, and untilvery recently totally heterosexual. They work on the ritual magicimage of the sexes being opposite and use this thought form tocreate images of electrical generators from sexual tension betweenmale and female. Gardnerians circled nude, used their cords totie initiates and scourge them as part of the initiation. Thereare no orgies however. The nudity was to encourage the "magic"which was thought to be inhibited by the robes. Present dayGardnerians mostly circle robed.Other Craft currents are the Alexandrian, similar to Gardnerian.The Dianic, a non-patristic oriented spirituality, birthed byMorgan Fairchild, encouraged by Z Budapest (a hereditary witchfrom Eastern Europe) and Marion Weinstein. The Fairie, a highlyeclectic movement and the Radical Fairies, a Gay men's grouping.Also we have the eclectic people who study religious archeologyand arrive at a synthesis that speaks to the modern day witch in amodern context. The biggest of these is called NROOGD (NewReformed Orthodox Order of the Golden Dawn) and the solitaries,people who are witches but belong to no group.We feel a large percentage of human beings have a very strong needfor a spiritual experience. Each human is different, however. Inour expressions of religion we tend to vary greatly. Thus we havemany religions extant today in America and the World. People mustfind the religion that fits their souls. For SunBear and Salmon,this religion is the religion of Wicca, Witchcraft.

The Sun cycles are the Quarter and Cross-Quarter holidays. TheQuarters are the Equinoxes and the Solstices and the cross quarterdays are the holidays that fall approximately half way between thequarters. These celebrations are called the SABBATS. There areeight Sabbats the psychic test witches celebrate: Yule, Imbolc, Eostara,Beltaine, Litha, Lammas, Mabon, Samhain. Other religions,classified as Pagan sometimes celebrated several of theseholidays. They also have celebrations unique and peculiar totheir religion.These festivals are called "The Wheel of the Year" and theysymbolize the continuity of the world and time. The sabbats areimportant to us. They symbolize our dependence on the land, adependence that many city dwellers have forgotten. Thesefestivals are often celebrated in larger communities, all thecovens of a geographical area getting together to celebrate. Thecovens celebrate the moon cycles. These are called ESBATS. Eachcoven picks it's celebration time according to how they wish towork. There are Waxing Moon covens, Full moon covens, Waning mooncovens and Dark Moon covens. A coven is a small gathering ofindividuals (2 to 15 is the usual number) that meets regularly onthe moon cycle. Often they are very close friends. Covens have avery variable cycle. Some gather once for a specific reason andnever again. Others stay viable for many years and even go intogenerations. There are some very long-lived covens in theCalifornia Bay Area and the Massachusetts area.A Circle is a gathering of members of different covens and peoplewho are solitairy. Circles gather on a regular schedule, butdon't have a regular attendance. Instead, a circle serves as across-pollinating discussion group where all can share theirexperiences and traditions.Witches don't go looking for converts. We don't want them. Noone can "convert" to Witchcraft. Witchcraft is a state of mindand a path through life. Thouigh it can be learned, it can onlybe learned by those who are ready to change their patristic,authoritarian models to the newer, consensual based models.Witchcraft is a very cozy home and community centered religion.New people who still tread the old path destroy the sense ofcloseness that we all treasure.People who are witches, are witches. People who are really readyto live the Wiccan life will find us. When the time is right forthe witch to find witch-folk they will see one of the manyposters, journals or books that are on display in just about everybookstore in America. Some people call us and complain about howhard it is to find witches. we just laugh good-naturedly. Weknow that when they are meant to find us, they will. It hasnothing to do with superstition of psychic powers or any odd-ballconcept like that. Simply, if a person is busy with too manytasks, clues that are present all around them will be discarded orignored from information overload. Integrating into a newreligious community is hard. A person can't do that andhalf-a-dozen other things at once. Once they are ready, time-wiseand emotionally, they will suddenly see that sign about "women'sspirituality" or "A Waxing Moon Circle" or the book or newsletterthat they've passed by millions of times before.We live by several truisms or rules. The greatest is known as theWiccan Rede: "Eight words the Wiccan Rede Fulfill; An ye harmnone, do as ye will.""An ye harm none." Translated into modern English: As long as whatyou do harms none. Well, what does NONE mean? How about, no onein our church, or of our race, on our planet, in the universe.Well, clearly this rede calls for a judgement call. Witches don'thave comfortable rules to abide or ignore. We examine our actionsand try to make sure that the harm isn't there As I say it is ajudgement call. "Do as you will?" What is will? It is not want,but will. It is the Ego vs the Id. In effect will isn't, "I wantsome chocolates because I'm feeling shitty." It is, "I willmyself to be whole, fit and productive."Other of our "pieces of wisdom" include:* A ban on accepting money for instructing in the Craft.* A ban on identifying other members of the Craft.* Respect for the aged.* A ban on touching another person's Craft tools (sacred objects).* Respect for everybody's personal, physical, and emotional space.Belief as in "faith is not a part of the Craft. Belief impliesthe need to take something as true on no rational evidence. Inthe Craft we do not "believe" in Goddess and God or in Apollo orHelios or Demeter or Hecate. The words are symbols that key ourconscious and unconscious to the reality of our cyclical life. Itisn't necessary to "believe" in Mabon, the Harvest Home. FallEquinox is a reality and so is the major harvest. To say, atYule, that the sun king is born, implies no mystical belief thatsomewhere a Goddess or woman is giving birth to a mystical child.It is a statement that the nights have reached their longestextent and from now until Summer Solstice we shall see the sunmore each day.Wiccans in general feel that the earth is a fragile ecosystem thatshould be supported in many ways. they are often involved ascitizens in nuclear banning movements, vegetarianism, organicfarming, trying to bring consumerism down, trying to strive for asociety that is not as hierarchical as the one we live in now.They look for voluntary cooperation and consensus more thananything else.Witchcraft is a religion that has no established dogma, noavatars, no prophets, no "holy writ handed down from on high" or"divinely inspired". We have no centralized organization and noway to control who calls themselves witches. Marion, a goodfriend in the South once said, "A witch is as good as her word."In the patristic Western religions prayers are offered up to a Godfor favors, healings, good fortune, and not uncommonly for badfortune to befall those identified as enemies. In the Craft we donot pray to a Goddess or God. We do a series of different kindsof work known as spellcasting to help ourselves. When we haveproblems we need to identify what the problem is and the possiblesolution in our minds and souls by the use of many stimuli thatwill help us remember what our "will" was in this particularproblem. Things we use vary from candles to be lit, oils madewith scents, stones to remind us, flower beds, clothes, kerchiefs,paintings, poems, songs, anything that can trigger our consciousand subconscious to deal adequately with problems that come up indaily life.

What is Wicca or Witchcraft? When we get asked that question weanswer it in a variety of ways, depending on just what the personis actually asking:

* The Craft is a polythesistic, nature based religion thatgenerally gives much more precendence to the Goddess (thea) thanthe God. Sometimes Witches will spell Goddess with a capital gbut god in lower case. That's one answer.

* The Craft is a religion where all are priestesses and priests.No one is in authority over you, or wants it. That's anotheranswer.

* The Craft is a religion where for every twelve witches, you getthirteen opinions on any subject.

* Witches are both males and female. A male witch is never a"warlock" (perish the word!)

* The Craft is split up into many separate movements, each with atruth.

* The Craft is a religion that has no central authority, nocentral dogma, no central organization, no total agreement onbasic tenants.

* Witchcraft is a unique religion. We don't "worship" anything.We "celebrate" on the cycles of the Sun and Moon (Sabbats andEsbats).

Monique and Campbell Wilson are infamous, rather than famous,as Gardner's heirs who sold off his magical equipment andpossessions after his death, to Ripleys in the USA.Monique was the last of his Priestesses, and many Wiccanstoday still spit when her name is mentioned. Pat Crowther wasrather scathing about her recently in an interview, and in TheRebirth Of Witchcraft, although Doreen tells of the sale of Gardner's magical possessions to Ripleys, she doesn't evermention the Wilsons by name. In effect, the Craft closed ranksagainst them, and they became outcasts.Eventually, in the face of such opposition they had to sellthe Museum in Castletown, and they moved to Torremolinos,where they bought a cafe. Monique died nine years afterselling the Museum. It is rumoured that Campbell Wilson movedto the USA, and met with a car accident there: this is onlyhearsay though - I really do not know for sure what happenedto him.However, Monique was influential in a way that even she couldnot have imagined, when in 1964 or 5 she initiated RayBuckland, who with his wife Rosemary (later divorced), wasvery influential in the development of the Wicca in the USA. Fortunately, Richard and Tamarra James managed to buy the bulkof Gardner's collection back from Ripleys in 1987, for theprincely sum of US$40,000, and it is now back within theCraft, and available for initiates to consult and view.D and C S. are probably completely anonymous, and if it werenot for the fact that C initiated Robert Cochrane (brieflymentioned earlier) they would probably stay that way!Cochrane's origins are obscure, but I have been told that hewas initiated into the Gardnerian tradition by C S, and metDoreen Valiente through a mutual acquaintance in 1964. When hemet Doreen, however, he claimed to be a hereditary witch, froma different tradition to Gardner's, and as Doreen confirms,was contemptuous of what he called "Gardnerian" witches.Indeed, Doreen believes he coined the term, "Gardnerian".Doreen said she was completely taken in by Cochrane and for awhile, worked with him and the "Clan of Tubal-Cain" as hedescribed his tradition, which was also known as "The RoyalWindsor Cuveen", or 1734.The figures "1734" have an interesting history. Doreen gives arather strange account of them in The Rebirth Of Witchcraft,which contradicts what Cochrane himself describes in a letterto Joe Wilson, dated "12th Night 1966", where he says,"...the order of 1734 is not a date of an event but a groupingof numerals that mean something to a witch."One that becomes seven states of wisdom - the Goddess of theCauldron. Three that are the Queens of the Elements - firebelonging alone to Man, and the Blacksmith God. Four that areQueens of the Wind Gods."The Jewish orthodoxy believe that whomever knows the Holy andUnspeakable name of God has absolute power over the world ofform. Very briefly, the name of God spoken as Tetragrammaton... breaks down in Hebrew to the letters YHVH, or the AdamKadmon (The Heavenly Man). Adam Kadmon is a composite of allArchangels - in other words a poetic statement of the names ofthe Elements."So what the Jew and the Witch believe alike, is that the manwho discovers the secret of the Elements controls the physicalworld. 1734 is the witch way of saying YHVH." (Cochrane, 1966)Although Doreen says that Cochrane's group was small, it stillproved to be remarkably influential. As well as Cochrane andhis wife (whom Doreen refers to as "Jean") and Doreen herself,there were others who are well-known today, and a man calledRonald White, who very much wanted to bring about a new age inEngland, with the return of King Arthur.In The Rebirth Of Witchcraft, Doreen elaborates upon thecircumstances surrounding the death of Cochrane: the baldfacts are that he died at the Summer Solstice of 1966 of anoverdose. Craft tradition believes that he became in fact, andof his own choice, the male ritual sacrifice which issometimes symbolically enacted at the height of Summer.The Royal Windsor Cuveen disbanded after Cochrane died, onlyto be re-born from the ashes at Samhain that year under a newname - The Regency. All of its early members were from theRoyal Windsor Cuveen, and they were under the leadership ofRonald White. The Regency proved to be of great importance tothe development of the Wicca, although its existence was kepta fairly close secret, and even today, there are relativelyfew people who have ever heard of it. Psychic test meetings were held in North London, at a place called QueensWood. As well as Ron White and Doreen Valiente, membersincluded "John Math", founder of the Witchcraft ResearchAssociation in 1964, and editor of Pentagram magazine, and thefounder of the Pagan Movement, Tony Kelly. At its height,there were frequently more than 40 in attendance at rites,which tended to be of the dramatic, pagan kind rather than theceremonial associated with high ritual magic. The Regencyoperated fairly consistently for over twelve years, finallydisbanding in 1978. The Membership roll reads like a who's whoof the British Wicca! Some of the rites have been incorporatedinto modern psychic test rituals - in fact, one was used at the PanEuropean Wiccan Conference 1991 with very great success.Moving back over to Rae Bone's line, there are a number ofinfluential people here, mainly through her initiates, Madgeand Arthur, who probably take the award for the most prolificpair in Wiccandom! Rae, although initiated by Gardner, does ofcourse also claim a hereditary status in her own right.Madge and Arthur's initiates include:John and Jean ScoreJohn Score was the partner of Michael Houghton (mentionedearlier), and the founder of the Pagan Federation, which isvery active today.Houghton died under very mysterious circumstances, which isbriefly mentioned in "The Sword of Wisdom" by IthellColquhoun. My Craft source told me that this was actually aritual that went badly wrong, and Houghton ended up on thewrong end of some fairly potent energies.There is an interesting anecdote about Houghton in The RebirthOf Withcraft, which is taken from "Nightside of Eden" byKenneth Grant, and agrees in some respect to a similar storythat I was told some years ago. Doreen suggests in The RebirthOf Witchcraft that the story may relate to a magical workinginvolving Kenneth Grant and his wife, Gardner, Dolores North(Madeline Montalban), and an un-named witch, who was probablyOlive Green.They were all to perform a ritual together, supposedly tocontact an extra-terrestrial being. The material basis for therite, which took place in 1949, was a drawing by AO Spare.Apparently soon after the rite commenced, a nearby bookseller(Michael Houghton) turned up and interrupted proceedings. Onhearing that Kenneth Grant was within, he declined to enter,and wandered off. The rite was disrupted, and the story goesthat everyone just went home.Kenneth Grant claims that as a result of disturbing theirworking, Houghton's marriage broke up, and that Houghton diedin mysterious circumstances. In fact, the Houghton divorce wasa cause celebre, with her suing him for cruelty because heboasted of being a Sagittarian while sneering at her becauseshe was only a dingy old Capricorn!The interrupted ritual could well have taken place. Madelinehad a flat near to Atlantis (Houghton's shop), and wouldcertainly have known both Grant and Houghton. I know for afact that Madeline was acquainted with Gerald, although heropinion of both him and the Wicca was rather poor. One ofMadeline's older students told me that she thought Gardnerrather a fraud, and ritually inept. She also had a very lowopinion of Wiccans, and refused to allow her own students toparticipate in Wiccan rites. The reason for this lies in ananecdote which Doreen doesn't relate: the story goes thatMadeline agreed to participate in a rite with Gerald, whichturned out to involve Madeline being tied up and tickled witha feather duster! The great lady was not amused.Prudence JonesPrudence was for many years the president of the PaganFederation, and editor of its newsletter. She inherited herrole from John Score, after he passed away. With NigelPennick, Prudence also runs the Pagan Anti-Defamation League(PADL), and is an active astrologer and therapist. She hasedited a book on astrology, and with Caitlin Matthews, edited"Voices from the Circle", published by Aquarian Press.Although Prudence took her degree in Philosophy, her maininterests lie in the areas of the Grail and troubadour tales,and she has published privately an excellent essay on theGrail and Wicca. She is also a very highly respectedastrologer, who lectures extensively in Britain.Vivianne and Chris CrowleyVivianne Crowley, is author of "Wicca - The Old Religion inthe New Age", and also secretary of the Pagan Federation. Shehas a PhD in Psychology, and is perhaps the only person tohave been a member of both a Gardnerian Coven and anAlexandrian one simultaneously!Vivianne is very active at the moment, and has initiatedpeople in Germany (having memorised the ritual in German - alanguage she doesn't speak!), Norway, and - on the astral -Brazil. As a result of her book, she receives many lettersfrom people from all around the world, and organised the firstever pan-European Wiccan conference, held in Germany 1990. Thesecond conference was held in Britain at the June solstice,and the third (1992) in Norway. In 1993, the Conference willbe in Scotland.John and Kathy (Caitlin) Matthews, are probably well-known toeveryone, but possibly their Gardnerian initiations are notsuch common knowledge. The story that John Matthews relates in"Voices from the Circle" is essentially the one which he toldthe HPS who initiated him.Pat and Arnold CrowtherI have left Pat and Arnold till last, as it is from their linethat the infamous Alex Sanders derives! It is no secretanymore that Alex, far from being initiated by his grandmotherwhen he was seven, was in fact turned down by Pat Crowther in1961, but was later accepted by one of her ex-coven members,Pat Kopanski, and initiated to 1st Degree.In "The Rebirth of Witchcraft" Doreen says that Alex later metGardner, and was allowed to copy from the Book of Shadows;Craft tradition is somewhat different! It has always been said(even by Alex's supporters!) that he pinched what he couldfrom Pat Kopanski before being chucked out, and that the maindifferences between the Alexandrian and Gardnerian Books ofShadows occur where Alex mis-heard, or mis-copied something!There are certainly significant differences between the twoBooks; some parts of Gardnerian ritual are quite unknownwithin the Alexandrian tradition, and the ritual techniquesare often different. It is usually very easy to spot whethersomeone is an Alexandrian, or Gardnerian initiate.Alex needed a HPS, and as we know, chose Maxine Morris for therole. Maxine is a striking Priestess, and made a very goodvisual focus for the movement which grew in leaps and bounds.In the late 1960s, Alex and Maxine were prolific initiators,and a number of their initiates have become well known. Somecame to Australia, and there are still a number of covens inthe UK today whose HP and/or HPS was initiated by Alex orMaxine.Alex and Maxine's most famous initiates are almost certainlyJanet and Stewart Farrar, who left them in 1971 to form theirown coven, first in England, then later, in Ireland. Throughtheir books, they have probably had the most influence overthe direction that the modern Craft has taken. Certainly inAustralia, the publication of "What Witches Do" was anabsolute watershed, and with Janet and Stewart's consistentoutput, their form of Wicca is more likely to become the"standard" than any other type.Since their early days of undiluted Alexandrianism, they havedrifted somewhat towards a more Gardnerian approach, andtoday, tell everyone that there are no differences between thetwo traditions. In fact, despite the merging that has beenoccurring over the last few years, there are very distinctdifferences between the traditions; some merely external,others of a very significant difference of philosophy.Seldiy Bate was originally magically trained by MadelineMontalban, and then took an Alexandrian initiation from Maxineand Alex. Her husband, Nigel, was also initiated by Maxine,and they have been "public" witches for a number of years now,often appearing on TV, radio and in the press. Theirbackground in ritual magic is expressed in the type of coventhat they run; a combination of Wicca and Ceremonial Magic.In 1971, Alex and Maxine went their separate ways. DavidGoddard is a Liberal Catholic Priest, and for many years, heand Maxine worked in the Liberal Catholic faith, and did notrun a coven of any kind. Then in 1984, Maxine gatheredtogether a group again, and started practising a combinationof Wicca, Qabalah and Liberal Catholicism. She and Davidseparated in 1987, and since then her coven has beenexclusively Wiccan. In 1989, she married one of her initiates,Vincent, and they are still running an active coven in Londontoday.Alex's history after the split was a little more sordid, withone girl he married, Jill, filling the gutter press withstories about Alex being homosexual, and defrauding her of allher money to spend on his boyfriends. Sally Taylor wasinitiated by Maxine and David, but then transferred to Alex.She was trained by him, and then started her own group.I'd now like to focus upon the last of the strands which Ibelieve has been influential upon the birth and development ofWicca; that of the literary traditions and sources to whichGardner would have had access. To a certain extent these arecontiguous with the magical traditions described earlier, asnowhere is it ever suggested that Gardner did in fact everwork in a magical Lodge, so we must assume that his knowledgecame from the written form of the rites, not from the actualpractise of them.From reading Gardner's books, it is quite apparent thatMargaret Murray had a tremendous impact upon him. Her book,"The God of the Witches" was published in 1933, and twelveyears previously, "The Witch Cult in Western Europe" hadappeared. "The God of the Witches" has been tremendouslyinfluential on a number of people, and certainly inspiredGardner.In fact, "Witchcraft Today", published by Gardner in 1954contained a foreword by Margaret Murray. At this time,remember, Murray's work was still taken seriously, and sheremained the contributor on the subject of witchcraft for theEncyclopedia Britannica for a number of years.Now of course her work has been largely discredited, althoughshe remains a source of inspiration, if not historicalaccuracy. In Gardner's day, the idea of a continuing worshipof the old pagan gods would have been a staggering theory, andin the second article in my series about Murray (published inThe Cauldron), I made the point that Murray may have had topretend scientific veracity in order to get her work publishedin such times. Don't forget that Dion Fortune had to publishher work privately, as did Gardner with High Magic's Aid.Carlo Ginzburg's excellent book, "Ecstasies", also supportsMurray's basic premise; although of course he regrets herhistorical deceptions.There were of course other sources than Murray. In 1899,"Aradia: Gospel of the Witches" was published. Most ofCrowley's work was available during the pre- and post-waryears, as were the texts written and translated by MacGregorMathers and Waite. Also readily available were works such asThe Magus, and of course the classics, from which Gardner drewmuch inspiration.Of paramount importance would have been "The White Goddess",by Robert Graves, which is still a standard reference book onany British Wiccan's bookshelf. This was published in 1952;three years after High Magic's Aid appeared, and two yearsbefore Gardner's first non-fictional book about witchcraft. Iwould just like to say at this point that Graves has takensome very unfair criticism in respect of this book. The WhiteGoddess was written as a work of poetry, not history, and tocriticise it for being historically innaccurate is to miss thepoint. Unfortunately, I agree that some writers have referredto it as an "authority", and thus led their readers up thegarden path. This is not Graves's fault, nor do I believe itwas his intention.Another book which has had a profound influence on manyWiccans, and would undoubtedly have been well known by Gardneris "The Golden Bough"; although the entire book was writtenbased upon purely secondary research, it is an extensiveexamination of many pagan practices from the Ancient World,and the emphasis of the male sacrifice could certainly havebeen taken from here equally as well as from Murray. Certainof the Gardnerian ritual practices were almost certainlyderived from The Golden Bough, or from Frazer's own sources.In "Witchcraft Today" Gardner mentions a number of authorswhen speculating where the Wiccan rites came from. He saysthat, "The only man I can think of who could have invented therites was the late Aleister Crowley."He continues to say, "The only other man I can think of whocould have done it is Kipling...". He also mentions that,"Hargrave Jennings might have had a hand in them..." and thensuggests that "Barrat (sic) of The Magus, circa 1800, wouldhave had the ability to invent or resurrect the cult."It's possible that these references are something of a damagecontrol operation by Gardner, who, according to Doreen, wasnot too impressed when she kept telling him that sherecognised certain passages in the Witch rites! "WitchcraftToday" was published the year after Doreen's initiation, andperhaps by seeming genuinely interested in where the Ritescame from, Gardner thought he might give the appearance ofinnocence of their construction!As mentioned previously, Gardner also had a large collectionof unpublished MSS, which he used extensively, and one hasonly to read his books to realise that he was a very well-readman, with wide-ranging interests. Exactly the sort of man whowould be able to draw together a set of rituals if required.The extensive bibliography to "The Meaning of Witchcraft"published in 1959, demonstrates this rather well. Gardnerincludes Magick in Theory and Practice and The Equinox of theGods by Crowley; The Mystical Qabalah by Dion Fortune; TheGoetia; The White Goddess (Graves); Lady Charlotte Guest'stranslation of The Mabinogion; English Folklore by ChristinaHole; The Kabbalah Unveiled and the Abramelin by Mathers; bothMargaret Murray's books and Godfrey Leland's Gypsy Sorcery, aswell as a myriad of classic texts, from Plato to Bede!Although this bibliography postdates the creation ofGardnerian Wicca, it certainly indicates from where Gardnerdraws his inspiration from. There are also several bookslisted which are either directly, or indirectly, concernedwith sex magic, Priapic Cults, or Tantra.Hargrave Jenning, mentioned earlier, wrote a book called "TheRosicrucians, their Rites and Mysteries", which Francis Kingdescribes as a book, "concerned almost exclusively withphallicism and phallic images - Jennings saw the peniseverywhere."As I mentioned earlier, Hargrave Jennings, a member of theSRIA, also belonged to a group, described as a coven, whichmet in the Cambridge area in the 1870s, and performed ritualsbased upon the classical traditions - specifically, from TheGolden Ass. There is no evidence to support this, except thatthere are often found references to a "Cambridge Coven" linkedto Jennings' name.Many of the rituals we are familiar with today were of courselater additions by Doreen Valiente, and these have been welldocumented by both her and the Farrars, in a number of books.Doreen admits that she deliberately cut much of the poetry byAleister Crowley, and substituted either her own work, orpoems from other sources, such as the Carmina Gadelica.Of course we can never really know the truth about the originsof the Wicca. Gardner may have been an utter fraud; he mayhave actually received a "Traditional" initiation; or, as anumber of people have suggested, he may have created the Wiccaas a result of a genuine religious experience, drawing uponhis extensive literary and magical knowledge to create, orhelp create, the rites and philosophy.What I think we can be fairly certain about is that he wassincere in his belief. If there had been no more to the wholething than an old man's fantasy, then the Wicca would not havegrown to be the force that it is today, and we would not allbe sitting here in Canberra on a Saturday morning!

Not only sad poems, but also magical practices in Wicca are oftenderived from GD sources. For example:the way of casting the circle: that is, the visualisation ofthe circle, and the pentagrams at the quarters, are both basedupon the standard GD Pentagram Ritual;both the concept and word "Watchtowers" are of course from theEnochian system of Magic, passed to Wicca via the GD (althoughI would like to make it very clear that their use within Wiccabears no relation to the use within Enochia - the onlysimilarity is in the name);the Elements and colours generally attributed to the Quartersare those of the GD;the weapons and their attributions are a combination of GD,Crowley and Key of Solomon.In "Witchcraft Today", Gardner says, "The people who certainlywould have had the knowledge and ability to invent (the Wiccanrites) were the people who formed the Order of the Golden Dawnabout seventy years ago...".The GD is not the only influence upon Gardner; Freemasonry hashad a tremendous impact upon the Wicca. Not only were thethree founders of Isis-Urania Temple Masons, so too wereCrowley and Waite; Gardner and at least one member of thefirst coven (Daffo) were both Co-Masons. Gardner was also afriend of JSM Ward, who had published a number of books aboutMasonry.Doreen describes Ward as a "leading Mason", but Francis Kingsays only that Ward was, "a bogus Bishop... who had writtensome quite good but far-fetched books on masonry, and who rana peculiar religious-cum-occult community called The Abbey ofChrist the King..." Whether the books were far-fetched ornot, we can assume that some of the many similarities betweenWicca and Masonry are in some ways due to Ward's influence.Some of these include:The Three DegreesThe CraftSo Mote It BeThe ChallengeProperly PreparedThe 1st Degree Oath (in part)Presentation of the Working Tools at 1st degreeand so on.It seems to me quite clear that even if Gardner received atraditional set of rituals from his coven, they must have beenexceptionally sparse, as the concepts that we know of as Wiccatoday certainly derive from ceremonial magic and Freemasonryto a very great extent. Indeed, Gardner always claimed thatthey were sparse.It could be argued that all derive from a common source. Thatthe appearance of a phrase, or technique in one tradition doesnot automatically suggest that its appearance elsewhere meansthat the one was taken from the other. However, Gardner admitshis sources in many cases, and Doreen confirms them in others,so I think it is safe to presume that the rituals andphilosophy used by Wicca descends from the traditions ofFreemasonry and Ceremonial magic, rather than from a singlecommon source. However, as Hudson Frew points out in hiscommentary upon Aidan Kelly's book, the phenomena of thetechniques and practices of ceremonial psychic magic influencing folkmagic and traditions is widely recognised by anthropologists,and certainly does not indicate plagiarism. And of coursethere are many traditional witchcraft aspects in the Wicca.We have looked at the development of the magical orders whichresulted from the British occult revival of the 19th and 20thcenturies, and now we can see where this ties in with Wicca,and Gardner's claim of traditional initiation.I have here a "family tree" of the main branches of BritishWicca. It is by no means exhaustive, and is intended toprovide an outline, not a definitive history! I have includedmy own coven lines and development as an indication of thekind of "cross-over" of tradition which often occurs, not tosuggest that these are the only active groups! Also, it wouldnot be ethical for me to include details of other covens.We have two possible "hereditary" sources to the GardnerianCraft: one, the Horsa Coven of Old Dorothy, and two, theCumbrian Group which Rae Bone claims to have been initiatedinto before meeting Gardner. (NB: Doreen Valiente says thatthe Horsa Coven is not connected with Old Dorothy, but isanother group entirely.) There is also sometimes mention of aSt Alban's group that pre-dates Gardner, but as far as I know,this is mistaken. The St Albans group was Gardner's own group,which as far as research confirms, did not pre-date him.To return to Rae Bone: she was one of Gardner's HPSs, and her"line" has been immensely important to the modern Wicca; shewas featured in the magazine series, "Man Myth and Magic" ifanyone has a copy of that.In her heyday she ran two covens: one in Cumbria, and one inSouth London. Rae is still alive, and lives in Cumbria,although her last coven moved to New Zealand many years ago,and she is no longer active. No-one has ever been able totrace the coven in New Zealand.At this point, I will just mention George Pickingill, althoughhe is not shown on the tree, as I think it extremely dubiousthat he had any connection with Gardner, or any other modern Psychic Wiccan.Pickingill died in 1909, whilst Gardner was still in Malaya.Eric Maple is largely responsible for the beginnings of thePickingill myth, which were expanded by Bill Liddell (Lugh)writing in "The Wiccan" and "The Cauldron" throughout the1970s. Mike Howard still has some of Liddell's material whichhe has never published, and I have yet to meet anyone withinthe British Craft who gives credence to Liddell's claims.In the book, "The Dark World of Witches", published in 1962,Maple tells of a number of village wise women and cunning men,one of whom is George Pickingill. There is a photographincluded of an old man with a stick, holding a hat, whichMaple describes as Pickingill. This photograph hassubsequently been re-used many times in books aboutwitchcraft and Wicca.Issue number 31 of "Insight" Magazine, dated July 1984,contains a very interesting letter from John Pope:"The photograph purporting to be Old George Pickingill is infact a photo of Alf Cavill, a station porter at Ellstree,taken in the early 1960s. Alf is now dead, but he was nowitch, and laughed over the photograph when he saw it."A very respected Craft authority has told me that he believesthe photo, which is in his possession, to be of Pickingill,but like so much to do with Craft history, there is nodefinitive answer to this one.Many claims were made by Liddell; some obviously from cloud-cuckoo land, others which could, by a stretch of theimagination, be accepted. The very idea of Pickingill, anilliterate farm labourer, co-ordinating and supervising ninecovens across the breadth of the UK is staggering. To accept -as Liddell avers - that he had the likes of Alan Bennett andAleister Crowley as his pupils bends credulity even further.The infamous photograph which Liddell claims shows Crowley,Bennett and Pickingill together has conveniently disappeared,and no-one admits to ever having seen it. Like most ofLiddell's claims, nothing has ever been substantiated, andwhen pushed, he retreats into the time honoured favourite of,"I can't reveal that - you're not an initiate"!But to return to the family tree: the names of DoreenValiente, Pat and Arnold Crowther, Lois Bourne (Hemmings),Jack Bracelin and Monique Wilson will probably be the mostfamiliar to you.Jack Bracelin is the author of Gardner's biography, "GeraldGardner, Witch", (published 1960) now out of print, althoughstill available 2nd hand, and in libraries. (In Crafting theArt of Magic, Kelly claims that this book was actually writtenby Idries Shah, and simply published under Bracelin's name. Aswith every other claim, Kelly offers no evidence of this)I have seen a copy of Bracelin's Book of Shadows, which it isclaimed dates from 1949, although in The Rebirth OfWitchcraft, Doreen says that Bracelin was a "relativenewcomer" in the mid-1950s. I have also been told by twodifferent sources that Bracelin helped Gardner write "TheLaws". In The Rebirth Of Witchcraft, Doreen states that shedid not see The Laws until the mid 1950s, when she and herpartner Ned Grove accused Gardner of concocting them in orderto re-assert control over the coven. As Bracelin was in theGardner camp during the break-up of the group, it seemsreasonable that he did in fact help with their composition.(NB: Alex Sanders increased the number of "The Laws" muchlater - these appeared in June Johns' book, "The King of theWitches")Although Doreen claims that the reason for the coven break-upwas the fact that Gardner and Bracelin were publicity crazy,there was another reason, which was the instatement of a newlady into the coven, effectively replacing Doreen as HPS. Thisis also the main reason for Gerald's Law which states that theHPS will, "...gracefully retire in favour of a younger woman,should the coven so decide in council." Needless to say,Doreen was not impressed, and she and Ned left the coven undervery acrimonious circumstances. It was quite some time beforeDoreen had contact with Gardner again, and they never quiteregained the degree of friendship that had previously existed.

There are three main psychic strands I intend to examine: one,Gardner's claim of traditional initiation, and its subsequentdevelopment; two, magical traditions to which Gardner wouldhave had access; and three, literary sources.As we look at these three main threads, it is important tobear in mind that Gardner was 55 years old at the time of hisclaimed initiation; that he had spent many years in Malaya,and had an enormous interest in magic, Folklore and Mythology.By the time he published High Magic's Aid, he was 65, and 75when "The Meaning of Witchcraft" appeared. He died in 1964, atthe age of 80.Gardner was born in 1884, and spent most of his working adultlife in Malaya. He retired, and returned to the UK in 1936. Hejoined the Folklore Society, and in June 1938, also joined thenewly opened Rosicrucian Theatre at Christchurch where it issaid he met Old Dorothy Clutterbuck.I chose 1939 as my arbitrary starting point as that was theyear that Gerald Gardner claims he was initiated by OldDorothy into a practising coven of the Old Religion, that metin the New Forest area of Britain. In his own words,"I realised that I had stumbled upon something interesting;but I was half-initiated before the word, "Wica" which theyused hit me like a thunderbolt, and I knew where I was, andthat the Old Religion still existed. And so I found myself inthe Circle, and there took the usual oath of secrecy, whichbound me not to reveal certain things." This quote is takenfrom The Meaning of Witchcraft, which was published in 1959.It is interesting that in this quote, Gardner spells Wiccawith only one "c"; in the earlier "Witchcraft Today" (1954)and "High Magic's Aid" (1949), the word Wicca is not evenused. His own derivation for the word, given in "The Meaningof Witchcraft", is as follows:"As they (the Dane and Saxon invaders of England) had nowitches of their own they had no special name for them;however, they made one up from "wig" an idol, and "laer",learning, "wiglaer" which they shortened into "Wicca"."It is a curious fact that when the witches became English-speaking they adopted their Saxon name, "Wica"."In "An ABC of Witchcraft Past and Present", Doreen Valientedoes not have an entry for Wicca, but when discussingWitchcraft, does mention the Saxon derivation from the wordWicca or Wicce. In the more recently published The Rebirth OfWitchcraft, however, she rejects this Saxon theory in favourof Prof. Russell's derivation from the Indo-European root"Weik", which relates to things connected with magic andreligion.Doreen Valiente strongly supports Gardner's claim oftraditional initiation, and published the results of hersuccessful attempt to prove the existence of DorothyClutterbuck in an appendix to "The Witches' Way" by Janet andStewart Farrar. It is a marvellous piece of investigation, butproving that Old Dorothy existed does nothing to supportGardner's claims that she initiated him.In his book, "Ritual Magic in England", occultist Francis Kingdoes offer some anecdotal evidence in support of Gardner'sclaims. However, it is only fair to point out that in the samebook, he virtually accuses Moina Mathers of murder, based upona misunderstanding of a story told by Dion Fortune! With thatcaveat, I'll recount the tale in full:King relates that in 1953, he became acquainted with LouisWilkinson, who wrote under the pen-name of Louis Marlow, andhad contributed essays to Crowley's Equinox. He later becameone of Crowley's literary executors. King says that inconversation, Wilkinson told him that Crowley had claimed tohave been offered initiation into a witch coven, but that herefused, as he didn't want to be bossed around by a bunch ofwomen. (This story is well-known, and could have been pickedup anywhere.)Wilkinson then proceeded to tell King that he had himselfbecome friendly with members of a coven operating in the NewForest area, and he thought that whilst it was possible thatthey derived their existence from Murray's "Witch Cult inWestern Europe", he felt that they were rather older.King draws the obvious conclusion; that these witches were thevery same as those who initiated Gardner. King claims that theconversation with Wilkinson took place in 1953, although"Ritual Magic in England" was not published - or presumablywritten - until 1970. However, on September 27 1952,"Illustrated" magazine published a feature by Allen Andrews,which included details of a working by, "the Southern Coven ofBritish Witches", where 17 men and women met in the New Forestto repel an invasion by Hitler. Wilkinson had told King ofthis working during their conversation, which King believes tobe proof that such a coven existed; there are some differencesin the two stories, and so it is possible that two sources arereporting the same event, but as Wilkinson's conversation withKing came after the magazine article, we shall never know.In the recently published "Crafting the Art of Magic", AidanKelly uses this same source to "prove" (and I use the wordadvisedly - the book "proves" nothing") that Gardner, Dorothy,et al created Wicca one night following a social get together!Of one thing we can be certain though: whatever its origin,modern Wicca derives from Gardner. There may of course beother traditional, hereditary witches, but even if they aregenuine, then it is unlikely that they would have been able to"go public" had it not been for Gardner.There have been many claims of "hereditary" origin (other thanGardner's own!) One of the most famous post-Gardner claimantsto "hereditary" status was actress Ruth Wynn-Owen, who fooledmany people for a very long time before being exposed. RoyBowers, who used the pseudonym Robert Cochrane, was another:Doreen Valiente describes her association with him in "TheRebirth of Witchcraft", and The Roebuck, which is still activein the USA today, derives directly from Cochrane, via JoeWilson.

"Witchcraft: A Tradition Renewed" by Evan John Joneswith Doreen Valiente describes a tradition derived from RobertCochrane. Alex Sanders, of course is another who claimedhereditary lineage, and like Cochrane, deserves his own placein this history, and we'll get to both of them later.Many people have been suspicious of Gardner's claims, and haveaccused him of making the whole thing up. They suggest thatthe Wicca is no more than the fantasy of an old man colouredby a romantic imagination. One particularly virulent attackupon Gardner came from Charles Cardell, writing under thepseudonym of Rex Nemorensis.

One of Gardner's initiates who is still active in the Wiccatoday has an interesting tale to tell about Cardell, whom heknew:"Cardell claimed to be a Witch, but from a different traditionto Gardner's. Cardell was a psychopathic rat, with malevolentintent toward all and sundry. He managed to get a woman calledOlive Green (Florannis) into Gardner's coven, and told her tocopy out the Book of Shadows so that Cardell could publish it,and destroy Gardner. He also contacted a London paper, andtold them when and where the coven meetings were held, and ofcourse the paper got quite a scoop. Cardell led people in thecoven to believe that it was Doreen Valiente who had informedon them.Doreen had just left Gardner in a bit of a huff after adisagreement; another coven member, Ned Grove, left with her.

Anyway, the day the paper printed the exposure, Cardell sentGardner a telegram saying, "Remember Ameth tonight". (Amethwas Doreen's Craft name, and as it has now been published, Isee no reason not to use it here)."My informant also said that Olive Green was associated withMichael Houghton, owner of Atlantis book shop in MuseumStreet, who was the publisher of High Magic's Aid. Throughthis association, she also encountered Kenneth Grant of theOTO, although their association was not friendly.Cecil Williamson, the original owner of the witchcraft museumon the Isle of Man, and present owner of the Witchcraft Museumin Boscastle, has also published a number of articles where hestates quite categorically that Gardner was an utter fraud;but, he offers only anecdotes to support these allegations.Although Gardner claimed his initiation occurred in 1939, wedon't really hear anything about him until 1949, when "HighMagic's Aid" was published by Michael Houghton.This book has very strong Solomonic leanings, but likeGardner's own religious beliefs, combined the more naturalforms of magic with high ceremonial. In his introduction tothe book, Gardner says that: "The Magical rituals areauthentic, party from the Key of Solomon (MacGregor Mathers'translation) and partly from magical MSS in my possession)."Gardner did indeed have a large collection of MSS, whichpassed with the rest of his goods to Ripleys in Toronto afterhis death.Scire (pseudonym) was the name Gardner took as a member ofCrowley's branch of the OTO; although it is generally agreedthat his membership was purely nominal, he was certainly incontact with people like Kenneth Grant and Madeline Montalban(founder of the Order of the Morning Star).Gardner was given his OTO degree and Charter by AleisterCrowley, to whom he was introduced in 1946 by Arnold Crowther.As Crowley died in 1947, their association was not long-lived,but Crowther confirms that the two men enjoyed each other'scompany.So, after that brief introduction we can have a look at thefirst of the strands I mentioned.In 1888, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was born,beginning a renaissance of interest in the occult that hascontinued to the present day. It is impossible to overstatethe importance of the GD to modern occultists; not only in itsrituals, but also in its personalities; and of course, throughmaking available a large body of occult lore that wouldotherwise have remained unknown, or hidden in obscurity.I will be looking at this body of occult lore with otherliterary influences later, and will here concentrate on therituals and personalities that have influenced Wicca.We cannot look at the GD in isolation from its own origins. Itis descended from a myriad of esoteric traditions includingRosicrucianism, Theosophy, and Freemasonry. The latter in itsown right, as well as via the SRIA - a scholarly andceremonial association open to Master Masons only.Whether the German Lodge or Fraulein Sprengel actually existedis a matter still under debate; but either in fact or inspirit, this is the source for the "Cypher Manuscripts" whichwere used to found the Isis-Urania Lodge in 1888.As I'm sure everyone knows, Isis-Urania was founded by DrWynn-Westcott, Dr Woodman, and MacGregor Mathers. Not onlywere all three Master Masons; Wynn-Westcott and Mathers werealso members of the Theosophical Society. The most importantthing though is the fact the these three men were a rulingtriumvirate that managed the affairs of the SRIA. This isimportant, for the SRIA included Hargrave Jennings in itsmembership, and Jennings is reputed to have been involved witha Pagan group at the end of the 19th century, which drew itsinspiration from Apuleius - The Golden Ass.But back to the GD - whether the Cypher Manuscripts actuallyexisted, or Wynn-Westcott manufactured them is now irrelevant;Mathers was commissioned to write-up the rituals into aworkable shape, and thus the Golden Dawn was born.Members of the Isis-Urania Lodge at various times alsoincluded Allan Bennett, Moina Mathers, Aleister Crowley,Florence Farr, Maud Gonne, Annie Horniman, Arthur Machen,"Fiona Macleod", Arthur Waite and WB Yeats. Also associatedwere Lady Gregory, and G W Russell, or AE, whose "The Candleof Vision" was included in the bibliography of "The Meaning ofWitchcraft". The literary and Celtic influences within the GDwere immense.From the Isis-Urania Lodge sprang all the others, includingthe so-called Dissident Orders derived through Crowley. It isthis line that some commentators trace to modern Wicca, so itis the one upon which we will concentrate.Aleister Crowley was initiated into the Isis-Urania Lodge on18 November 1898. As you most probably know, Crowley laterquarrelled with MacGregor Mathers, and in 1903 began to createhis own Order, the Argenteum Astrum, or Silver Star. In 1912,Crowley was initiated into the OTO, and in 1921, succeededTheodor Reuss as its Chief.According to Arnold Crowther's account, it was in 1946, a yearbefore Crowley's death, that Crowley gave Gardner an OTOCharter. Ithell Colquhoun says only that it occurred in the1940s, and further states that Gardner introduced materialfrom the OTO, and less directly from the GD, into "...the loreof his covens".As Doreen Valiente also admits, "Indeed, the influence ofCrowley was very apparent throughout the (Wiccan) rituals.".This, Gardner explained to her, was because the rituals hereceived from Old Dorothy's coven were very fragmentary, andin order to make them workable, he had to supplement them withother material.To give an example of some of the lines by Crowley which arerather familiar to modern Wiccans:I give unimaginable joys on earth; certainty, not faith, whilein life, upon death; peace unutterable, rest, ecstasy; nor doI demand aught in sacrifice.I am Life, and the giver of Life, yet therefore is theknowledge of me the knowledge of death.And of course, the Gnostic Mass has been immenselyinfluential.

Psychic test: The Men in Black

All things considered, UFO research has become pretty much of a circus today, and the most intriguing and controversial sideshow skirting the edges is the question of the "silencers," or the mysterious "Men in Black." There is a strong subliminal appeal in these accounts of visits by mysterious dark-suited figures (I have been visited myself, as have others I've known) attempting to silence UFO witnesses. A typical situation would be that a witness has a UFO sighting or UFO-related experience. Shortly thereafter he is visited by one or more "odd"-looking men who relate to him the minutest details of his experience, even though he has as yet told no one for fear of ridicule or other reasons.

The men warn him about spreading the story of his experience around and sometimes even threaten him personally, sometimes obliquely, sometimes directly. Any evidence, if it exists, is confiscated in one way or another. Sometimes the visit is for some totally meaningless reason and the subject of UFOs is hardly mentioned, if at all. But again, the men all seem to look alike.

We actually seem to find ourselves in close proximity to beings who obviously must be directly connected in some way with the objects themselves or the source behind them, yet they seem to be functioning unobtrusively within the framework of our own everyday existence.

The classic conception of an MIB is a man of indefinite age, medium height and dressed completely in black. He always has a black hat and often a black turtleneck sweater. They present an appearance often described as "strange" or "odd." They speak in a dull monotone voice, "like a computer," and are dark-complected with high cheekbones, thin lips, pointed chin, and eyes that are mildly slanted.

The real aliens themselves are often on absurd missions. They have reportedly posed as salesmen, telephone repairmen or representatives from official or unofficial organizations. Their mode of transportation is usually large and expensive cars -- Buicks or Lincolns, sometimes Cadillacs, all black, of course. I might note at this point that their physical appearance also has included beings that have pale-greyish skin, and that some of them have been seen to have blond hair, yet they wear the clothing and drive the cars previously described.

Their cars often operate with the headlights off, but ghostly purple or greenish glows illuminate the interior. Unusual insignia have been seen emblazoned on the doors and the license plates are always unidentifiable or untraceable. The fabric of their clothes has been described as strangely "shiny" or thin, but not silky -- almost as if they have been cut from a new type of fabric.

Their often mechanical behavior has caused them to be described by some as being like robots or androids (think back to the Dulce lab).

A lot of descriptions of some of these "folks" are pretty bizarre. A businessman's family in Wildwood, New Jersey, was visited by an unusually large man whose pants legs hiked up when he sat down, revealing a green wire grafted onto his skin and running up his leg.

There are other cases of MIB appearing on the other side of a wet, muddy field after a heavy rain, but having no mud whatever on their brightly shined shoes and in the bitter cold, out of nowhere, wearing only a thin coat. Their shoes and wallets all seem new and hardly broken in.

They are not alone. They seem to have faceless conspirators in the nation's post offices and phone companies. Researchers and witnesses often report their mail going astray at an unusually high rate and being bothered by bizarre phone calls where they are spoken to by metallic, unhuman-sounding voices.

Unusual noises on the phone, intensifying whenever UFOs are mentioned, and voices breaking in on conversations, have all led many people to suspect that their phones are being tapped.

One can't discuss the MIB for long without mentioning the name of John A. Keel, an author who has written much about them. Keel has done more than any other writer to publicize this bizarre aspect of the UFO situation. Keel suggests that the UFO are part of the environment itself and come from another time-space continua; that most of the UFO phenomena is psychic and psychological rather than physical. Well, I personally would not define it that way, although those two components are certainly deeply involved in what's going on. The first noted appearance of the MIB was in 1947, at the scene of the Maury Island incident, where some debris was ejected from a disk, and subsequently recovered by officials, who loaded them on an Army bomber which crashed on takeoff.

Psychic Test: Zimbabwe UFO

Back in 1985, a round object topped with a cone was seen by dozens of peopleover the skies of Zimbabwe. With pilots, air traffic controllers, andcivilians among the witnesses, that country turned to aeronautical expertsfor an explanation. Now, a year and a half later, Zimbabwe's Air CommodoreDavid Thorne sees no explanation in sight. "We have not been able toidentify the object," he says. "We have had to classify it as a UFO."
Although he didn't personally witness the object, Thorne reports that "thecraft was spotted as it streaked over southern Zimbabwe. Then air trafficcontrollers watched it hover and tracked it on radar. 2 Air Force jets wentafter the object, and the pilots described it as incredibly shiny, reflectingthe colors of the sunset. Our estimates indicate that the UFO was travelingat twice the speed of sound. And when it got dark outside, we realized theobject was emitting its own light. Our pilots are completely reliable,"Thorne contends. "This cannot be dismissed as a plane, weather balloon, ornatural phenomenon."
But UFO skeptic James Oberg has his doubts. "The evidential value ofunresearchable sightings in Zimbabwe is zero, however sincere the witnesses,"he says. "Besides, pilots are not always calm, dispassionate observers.They tend to perceive any visual stimulus in its most dangerous possibleconfiguration -- as another craft. That's a good characteristic of a safepilot, but not a good characteristic of a UFO witness." Oberg also points outthat "Zimbabwe is sort of on the edge of the civilized world in terms oftracking things that might cause this kind of UFO report -- like Russian andSouth African reconnaissance planes that, I'm sure, are flying over thatairspace."

COMMENTS ON SALISBURY INVESTIGATION

I read with great interest a text file which I recently downloadedfrom Paranet-Alpha concerning the investigation into the Salisbury ghostlight phenomena conducted on November 20-21, 1976 and have a fewcomments and criticisms to air out here.

I personally met Robert E. Jones, President of Vestigia, at the1986 Fortfest conference held in Tyson's Corner, Virginia and he struckme as being a very courteous, knowledgable, intelligent but somewhatsecretive person. I questioned him on several technical details of hisinvestigation into the Salisbury ghost light but received little in theway of straight-forward answers. He did respond that this was the onlysuch phenomena (ghost lights), that he has ever investigated before orsince. The statement somewhat shocked me!

I have been aware of Vestigia for sometime and thought that theydealt extensively with anomalous phenomena; UFOlogy, Ectomorphology andthe Paranormal in general. I got the distinct impression that this wasuntrue while talking to Mr. Jones.

The untitled, unauthored text regarding this investigation was readseveral times by myself and other senior members of the Ghost ResearchSociety which has investigated many similar lights including: BrownMountain Lights - North Carolina, Maco Light - North Carolina, Gurdon -Arkansas, Maple Lake light - Willow Springs, Illinois, The Moody Light -Francisville, Indiana, Watersmeet light - Michigan, Joplin Light -Joplin, Missouri and others. I would just like to comment on a few itemsin their investigation. I wish to state here and know, that I do notintend to be critical of the tests performed or sound insulting to anyof the testers themselves. I only intend to enter my own doubts andcomments here for the record. Being somewhat of an expert in infrared photography and since thistype of film was used as part of the investigation, I would just like toadd the following comments.

Normal color films have three emulsion layers, one sensitive tored, green and blue. Infrared's are sensitive to infrared, red and greenwavelengths and using a yellow filter for color infrared work blocks outthe blue wavelengths to which these layers are also sensitive to. Theinfrared sensitive emulsion in IR film is sensitive to wavelengths fromabout 700 to about 900 NM, ( a NM - nanometer is equal to one billionthof a meter), a range of about 200 NM. The visible spectrum consists of a300 NM band from 400 to 700 NM. In this 300 NM band are all thedifferent colors of the spectrum.

It is therefore reasonable to assume that there are severaldifferent IR "colors" in the 200 NM band between 700 and 900 NM,"colors" that are different but invisible to our eyes. There is no wayto determine which of these infrared colors are being reflected by thesubject. There are many variables in IR color photography, the time ofday, weather conditions, subject matter, filters, etc.

Black and white high-speed IR photography is somewhat morepredictable. It is sensitive to ultraviolet and blue wavelengths, justas all film is, but is also sensitive to red and infrared wavelengths. Adeep red filter (No. 25) is usually best to use because it absorbs blueand ultraviolet wavelengths. By using different colored filters witheither black and white or color IR film, you can change the colorscaptured on film and produce different results.

In general, IR film will detect and pick up phenomena of aninvisible nature, including, but not limited to: invisible light, heatsources, IR radiation, stray energy sources, electrical stimulations,and, depending on what filter you use, ultraviolet radiation.

No reference was made to what kinds of filters were used or theeffect that was captured on film. So, no determination can be made, atthis time, to exactly what, if anything, was captured on film.

There was also some results that tend to suggest the possibility ofpiezoelectrical effects from quartz crystals under stress. While this isan extreme possibility, it still is a somewhat rare and littleunderstood principle. I rather doubt that this could be causing thelights to appear on so many occasions! While I understand that there mayindeed be a faultline running parallel to the tracks, other explanationsare also possible. One possible explanation could be a temperature inversion layercaused by the heat released from the hot railroad tracks which wouldcollide with the cooler surrounding air and cause mirages to form. Ifthe lights were photographed through polarized lens and the light didn'tpolarize then it means it's not a reflection. A galvanometer would alsobe another good test to see if any electromagnetic current was beingreleased at the times the light was visible.

The drop in barometric pressure could simply have been caused alocalized low-pressure system. The testers did report a light snowfalldirectly followed the lights disappearance. There is nothing strangeabout a sudden drop in pressure followed by a snowfall. Especiallynothing that could be attributed to the light. The testers alsosuggested that the lights effect was enhanced by those conditions, whichI find highly improbable.

I suggest that further tests be conducted with different types ofequipment and we will be visiting the Salisbury area during the month ofOctober, 1987. We will publish our findings here.

All in all, the investigation was well coordinated, professionallyhandled, however I feel that some incorrect conclusions may have beendrawn from the results. I would, however, be willing to change myopinions given additional information and further test findings.
